Fans of celebrities or sportspersons are easy victims of scammers. They sometimes fail to check the authenticity of the account in their urge to stay connected with their favorite golfers. In some cases, fans were promised to meet their favorites, while in others they were promised to get signed merchandise. In August, Paige Spiranac, the internet sensation, took to Instagram about certain scams that were going on disguised as her profile and shared on her story, warning people to be careful of fake accounts that are asking for money in her name.
Even Charley Hull shared a post recently of scam accounts that are asking for money from her fans in exchange for a meet and greet; dismissing this and telling her fans to be wary about it. The latest to join the list is Lexi Thompson for the second time after the first incident happened at the end of October.
Sharing on her Instagram story, she stated, “Just another reminder here 😂 This is my one AND only social media page.” She has made it clear about her accounts while also exposing the scams that have been going on in her name. Stating further, “There are SO MANY fake pages scamming people for money, gifts, or tricking them to think I’m in a relationship with them. IT ISN’T ME!”

While further sharing, she apologized to the followers for any losses incurred and asked everyone to report any such accounts, as she could not report the scammers alone. At last, she even wished everyone, “Have an amazing holiday season♥️.” However, this isn’t the first time that fans have seen this kind of story and post from her.

Lexi Thompson joins other professional golfers to share about scams on social media
The list of golfers who have shared instances of fans getting scammed is quite a few. Now that there are frequent victims of this, golfers have taken action to create awareness of this reality through social media posts and stories. Starting in 2023, Lexi Thomspon has shared knowledge about how fake accounts are scamming people and not to fall for any such practices. Eventually, she created a dedicated post for this situation and mentioned her official account in that. Other golfers such as Paige Spiranac, and Jin Young Ko have also followed this same example. Paige Spiranac being a social media sensation apart from a great golfer, shared how scammers are increasing, while during a podcast she shared more details about it. She further shared how she used to report 20 accounts daily. On the other hand, Jin Young Ko also shared her own experience and explained to followers to follow only blue-tick-verified accounts.

With such scams increasing day by day, professional golfers are bound to become concerned about it. Even though they have taken the much-needed actions to curb it, there isn’t any sign of it ending anytime soon. However, fans will have to be more aware of the accounts they are following and not make payments to unreliable sources. What are your thoughts on the scams going on?
