Since Lexi Thompson’s strong debut at the PGA Tour, the internet has been abuzz with demands for more such events. The call for mixed-gender events is not new, however. PGA commissioner Jay Monahan, himself, admitted the management’s interest in this in 2018.
So, when Thompson teed up against her male counterparts, becoming only the seventh woman in history to do so, fans were eager to see if she could prove her mettle. Although the 28-year-old LPGA star failed to make the cut by two shots, her score of 73-69 made a strong statement. Following up on that, a veteran golf pundit has come up with a more radical idea that has split the Twitterati in half.
Lexi Thompson continues to rock the boat with outstanding debut

For Lexi Thompson, it was never about making the cut. She didn’t sound too crestfallen speaking to the media after crashing out of the tournament. For the star, it was more about inspiring upcoming golfers and Shriners’ children.
Her strong performance, however, has done more than just that. While there was a demand that more such events should happen, now, D.J. Piehowski of No Laying UP podcast demanded that the Presidents Cup be made a mixed-gender event.
The former editor of Golfweek retweeted a post from the PGA Tour showcasing the LPGA star’s impressive stats at the Shriners Children’s Open. “I am once again asking you to make the Presidents Cup a mix team event put on by the PGA Tour and LPGA Tour,” wrote the veteran sports journalist.
I'm once again asking you to make the Presidents Cup a mixed team event put on by the PGA Tour and the LPGA.
All the props in the world to Lexi and everyone involved! https://t.co/2EPhc1CZTr

Presidents Cup has long been tilted in favor of the USA. Before the 2022 Presidents Cup, a report revealed that only 12 of the top 50 male golfers belonged from outside the USA & Europe. Whereas, 29 of the top 50 players on the Rolex Women’s Ranking hailed from outside Europe. Therefore, a mixed-gender Presidents Cup might make it more balanced. However, while most commended Thompson’s feat, they appeared averse to this idea.
What the netizens have to say about this radical proposal
Although most agree that Lexi Thompson deserved the chance, not all fall in line with the idea of bringing LPGA stars inside the rope at the Presidents Cup. In fact, some even came up with their own ideas instead.
One user felt instead of the Presidents Cup, the Olympics is the more appropriate place to try out men, women and mixed-gender events.
All props to Lexi… 💯🎯
Converting Presidents Cup to mixed… 👎Nope.
But adding a men's, a woman's and mixed team events/medals to the Olympics… Heck yes.

Another fan came up with the idea of a mixed event among the top fifty players from both sides.
Id like to see a new mixed event. Top 50 Lpga and top 50 PGA. Would be very interesting.

One of the users pointed out that PGA would miss out on the revenue if that happens. So, there is no practical benefit for PGA.
Zero upside for the pga tour. I agree it would be cool but why split the profit for zero more income.

The 11-time LPGA Tour winner sent ripples across the globe with her performance. And one fan was straight up convinced with the idea.
As a Canadian I completely agree

One fan hoped that the Grant Thornton Invitational in December would prove the point. The 2014 Kraft Nabisco champion is set to team up with Rickie Fowler in the inaugural event.
I hope the Grant Thornton event later this year proves how good that concept would be

One user simply wanted more events like this to happen. That seems to be the popular demand across the internet.

The Presidents Cup has been played 14 times, with the USA bringing the trophy home 12 times. A mixed-gender event might spice up the one-sided tournament.
