Should the wealthy owners of LIV Golf step up and cover the financial shortfalls?

Out of the many things that set LIV Golf apart from the PGA Tour is the lack of sponsorships for its events. The breakaway circuit is backed by Saudi Arabia’s PIF, which has a net worth of around $920 billion, providing lucrative support for all of LIV’s events, except for LIV Golf United Kingdom, which was also sponsored by JCB.

Although the breakaway league has not revealed any monetary issues disrupting its operations, fans of the 54-player circuit have been discussing ways to secure more sponsorships for LIV Golf. An avid supporter had two suggestions for Greg Norman’s league, which they posted on Reddit. The first suggestion was for LIV Golf to seek sponsorships similar to JCB, particularly in specific regions. Hypothetically, if there were a LIV Golf Japan in the future, the fan suggested that companies like Nintendo, Toyota, or Nissan could sponsor the event.

Another suggestion for improving the Norman-led league was to introduce a Thursday Pro-Am featuring local celebrities. The user asked, “Can you imagine a LIV Austin Pro-Am with Matthew Mcconaughey, Glen Powell, and Colt McCoy? or LIV Adelaide with Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, and Margot Robbie.”

Notably, there have been rumors of LIV Golf partnering with PGA Tour’s allies and gaining more sponsors. Fans have offered additional ideas, sparked by the initial suggestions that went viral. This led to a wave of other fans proposing ways LIV Golf could improve its financial standing and future prospects.

LIV Golf features 12 teams, each owned by its captain, such as Bryson DeChambeau, who owns Crusher GC. However, this doesn’t mean the captains don’t earn anything when their team wins in the team events. One fan suggested a model similar to TGL, where the six teams are owned by different entrepreneurs. One fan said, “Franchise the teams and let the owners pay the players. No salary cap. Same model as F1 or baseball. This will create more incentive for the players to perform and also more pressure to get results.”

Since LIV Golf was started, the 54 golfers have always been worried about their major qualifications. Even this year the players were stressed as their ranks on the OWGR were dropping and they didn’t have any other way of qualifying. So, what if they did not have to worry about that and played in LIV’s own major? Not only that, but other golfers also could participate. On the ways LIV Golf could improve, this user said, “Have Three Major “LIV” events per year that are played over 4rds. These events gain OWGR points. These three events are open up to the whole golf ecosystem. Shotgun start is removed. Field increased to normal size. The team part of it can still apply but not the main focus. $30m prize money.”

Have an interesting take?

The old LIV Golf might need to make a comeback. Old LIV means the time when the breakaway circuit used to broadcast all three rounds on YouTube in the first year it started. So, all the events were basically free for the fans, thus, this user wanted it back. As the comment reads, “I personally enjoyed it more when there were no sponsors/TV deal. Free golf on YouTube with no advertising was an incredibly refreshing break from all of the commercials during a PGA event.” Given the PGA Tour’s frequent criticism for commercial load, if LIV improves in this area, fans might appreciate it more.

While many in the golf community do not like the 54-hole format of LIV Golf, this fan begs to differ. This user had only a few suggestions for the circuit which would make it more enjoyable while watching. The comment reads, “Be more “Golf but louder” and continue being less PGA esque. I love the current format but I would like a faster pace of play, an added “playing through” segment, and allow more communication between teammates during playoffs.”

While many were putting in their suggestions, one user was doing the opposite. This fan did not like the disruptive league and declared that it was not real competition. The user commented furiously, “No one cares about any of this. This is clearly a Bot trying to pretend there are actual fans of this exhibition nonsense.”
