The 2024 season for the PGA Tour is over, and the World No. 1 clinched yet another trophy. The second part of this sentence has become a common saying this year! What a season it has been for Scottie Scheffler! Winning eight PGA Tour events in a single season, bagging the Gold Medal at the Olympics, and welcoming his first baby, as lucrative as it can get. His professional success was a result of his hard work and the changes he kept on making.
This season started with a new mallet putter and ended with a new claw grip. With him on his team is one of the greatest putting coaches, Phil Kenyon. All of this helped him improve, for sure. He has managed to break one record after another. In March, he became the first golfer ever to successfully defend his title at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. In the Bahamas, Scheffler became only the third player to win the HWC in back-to-back years. He joined Tiger Woods (2006-2007) and Norway’s Viktor Hovland (2021-2022) in achieving this rare feat. He also tied Tiger Woods (200) and Vijay Singh (2004) for the highest number of wins in a single season since 1950. However, for the 28-year-old, golf is beyond just breaking records and taking home trophies.
After defeating Tom Kim a few hours ago at Albany by a whopping six strokes, at the post-round presser, when asked about what records mean to him, Scottie Scheffler humbly said, “I never really played golf for legacy; that’s not something I think about in the day today.” Then what is that #1 really craves and plays for?

“I play because I love the competition; I love coming out here and competing. I like trying to get the most out of myself out here on the golf course. That’s why I’m always trying to improve, trying to do little things to get better,” revealed the 2x Masters winner. “I don’t think about records, I don’t think about achievements, wins, or losses; I just try and get the most out of myself and come out here and compete and have a good attitude.”

If someone wants to build a legacy, they might have to dedicate all of themselves to it. But for #1, golf is just a part of his life, and not his entire life. His priority is his family. Scottie Scheffler, who defeated Sepp Straka by three strokes last year, also clarifies that playing golf has never been about money for him either. He does it for the sake of his passion.

Money is not important for Scottie Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler had managed to bag a whopping $29,228,357 until the Tour Championship. Now, add a million more to this after his Albany win. It is a huge sum indeed. But it’s not money that drives him. “And I want to win just as badly for zero dollars as I do for whatever millions of dollars it is. The money’s not my motivation. And so I don’t; it’s not something I think about. It’s just a bonus that happens when you’re out here playing tournaments. It’s a very nice thing to have.”
In 2022, Scheffler revealed that he still drives his decade-old GMC Yukon 2012; “I do have the same car, still really dirty; I actually need to get it washed but I don’t know if it’s like worthy of me washing. I don’t put any miles on it at home. My dad put all the miles on the car. I think now I’m still at 178, and you may have asked me that question a few months ago; it was still probably 178. If I buy something new, it could struggle, so I don’t ever drive it more than 5 minutes from my house.” Scheffler is truly a simple man. The car however is now being auctioned to raise money for Triumph Over Kid Cancer.

To end his year on the perfect note, this year’s win in the Bahamas was a rather special one too. Tiger Woods, the host of the event, was himself there to give him the trophy. “It’s pretty surreal anytime you get—it’s surreal almost when you get in the same room with Tiger, but it’s pretty surreal having him hand you a trophy at the end of the day,” said Scottie Scheffler on Sunday.
Well, he did once again manage to show how he is helping take modern golf to new heights. What are your thoughts on the season-ending banger for the World No. 1? Let us know in the comments section below!
