Scottie Scheffler wants to put Friday morning away like a nightmare from Thursday. The current world no. 1 has released an official statement clarifying what transpired on the road when he was pulled out of his car and handcuffed. The reigning Masters champion admitted it was the result of a ‘big misunderstanding’ between him and the officers.

Scheffler wrote, “This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions.”

In the police complaint, Scheffler has been charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals. Assault is a class C offense, which, if convicted, can result in 5–10 years of imprisonment. Jonathan Lemire of Politico tweeted that the police report states one officer had to be hospitalized after being allegedly dragged by Scheffler’s vehicle, which was an official PGA Championship car.

After his arrest, many of his colleagues pointed out that PGA Tour pros often face commotion in front of the gate. So, Schefler must have confused the blockade, which was the result of an accident, with normal traffic. Jeff Darlington, who was on the site, also reported a chaotic and confusing conversation Scheffler had with the officer. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old reiterated his desire to put everything aside. And, at the course, Scheffler showed that he was quick to forget the incident.

Scottie Scheffler refused to make it worse than it already is

Scheffler, a new dad on Tour, is coming to Valhalla after knocking off four titles in his last five appearances. The only exception was a T2 at the Texas-Houston Open. Scheffler carded 4-under 67 in the opening round, settling five shots behind the leader, Xander Schauffele

In the official statement, the world no.1 added, “I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.

Scottie Scheffler arrived at the course on a Range Rover, presumably driven by Valhalla Golf Club owner. Marty Smith of ESPN asked for a comment upon his arrival. Scheffler only replied with a smile, “Love you, Marty” before dashing to the locker room. On the practice range, Rickie Fowler asked if everything was alright. “All good,” Scheffler responded.  Scheffler has already birdied his opening hole!
