Evolution and development go hand in hand with time. Golf, and every other sport, has witnessed a significant improvement due to technological advancement and skill perfection. However, Lee Trevino believes that more than equipment, humans have led this progress. And his example to this claim is none other than Bryson DeChambeau.

Trevino, who recently celebrated his 82nd birthday, was in conversation with Michael Breed of SiriusXM. The six-time major champion spoke about the change in golf and gave his views on the matter.

Breed asked him, “Has the advancements in technology, and specifically, I’m talking about chaff’s, club heads etc. Has that had a major influence on the way people can swing a golf club to become a little bit more dynamic and possibly even create a little more clubhead speed?”

In answer, Lee Trevino said, “Well, there’s two sides to that question. One is that you guys have learned more about it. You know how to maneuver the golf club. So the instruction part of all the professionals and people that teach this game is absolutely second to none. I mean, they’re very good at detecting.”

“The equipment, yes, has changed somewhat. But not as much as the human element. The guy has gotten bigger, he’s gotten faster, he’s gotten stronger. They’ve got all these machines to test the muscles and look at what Bryson did. Bryson put forty pounds on and he put fifty yards on the drive. I mean, this is where it’s gone,” he added.

Lee Trevino’s example: How has Bryson DeChambeau transformed the game?

While everyone was taking some much-deserved time off during the pandemic, Bryson was busy preparing his body for the next wave in golf. A rigorous training routine, a strict diet revolving around protein shakes, and a lot of gym time helped him gain a tremendous amount of muscle.

When he teed it up again, he shocked the golf world. For the 2021 season, he had the maximum club head speed on the PGA Tour, heading ahead of power players like Rory McIlroy, Cameron Champ, and Matthew Wolff. His fastest speed is a massive 138.39 mph while his average is 132.25 mph.

Earlier, golfers have preferred hitting the distance. However, no one had as much success as Bryson. He started this trend, and it is now very common to see golfers try to push their limits and hit as far as they can.
