As we all know, ever since Tiger Woods’s TGL came into the market, it has been making waves in the golf world. One of the rising stars in this new landscape is Tom Kim, a talented South Korean golfer who is making a name for himself with his impressive skills and dedication to the game. As a clutch putter and a rising star, Kim has already racked up an impressive resume, including 3 PGA Tour wins, 7 international wins, and the 2021 Korean Tour Player of the Year award. With his sights set on even greater success, Kim is a player to watch, and his story is one of passion, perseverance, and a love for the game. So, despite all the amazing achievements Kim has, why is he being labeled as an ‘irritant’?

In the latest episode by 5 Clubs on YouTube, host Gary Williams shared his candid thoughts on the current state of golf, specifically talking about Tom Kim’s rise to TGL as he joined Tiger Woods’s Jupiter Links. Williams jokingly referred to Kim as a troublesome figure, saying “I didn’t think two years ago that Tom Kim was going to become one of the leading irritants in golf, but he is.” As he recalled, “Tom Kim reminds me of the kid back in my day.” Williams’s comments sparked a lively discussion about Kim’s antics on the TGL tour and his rising profile in the golf world.

The conversation also shifted to the Boston-based team, comprised of esteemed members including Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, and Keegan Bradley. Noting that their captain, a true Boston native, has a genuine affinity for the city – unlike some other team members. As Williams put it, “Nobody else who plays for Boston Common has any real affinity to the city.” He also pointed out that this team is uniquely comprised of members who have all won major championships, saying “They’re the only team that’s got every member that’s won a major championship”, and it is true.

Well, Kim is not the only player who has been under heavy scrutiny ever since TGL started.

Are players like Patrick Cantlay killing the fun?

Patrick Cantlay, a strategic genius on the course, has found himself at the receiving end of criticism for being “boring”. Fans have been piling on, calling him an “awkward robot” and a “buzzkill” due to his lethargic style and lack of energy on the course. The criticism reached a boiling point when Cantlay refused to let Justin Thomas throw the hammer after a putt in TGL, leaving fans wondering what went wrong.

However, Billy Horschel came to Cantlay’s defense, explaining that the decision was part of a strategic plan. As Horschel put it, “I think the hammer is a cool thing and we’ve seen it the last couple of weeks, but if you don’t use it wisely, it can backfire. With Pat, we’re all very much strategic and trying to understand, but Patrick takes it to another level, and he’s like, guys, we don’t use it in these certain ranges and everything, and we let him make the decision of when we needed to throw it, and once we got up early, he said, hey, guys, we’re going to hang on to this. It was as simple as that.” Despite this explanation, some fans continue to criticize Cantlay, calling him the “most boring person on the planet” and the “least likable American in golf”. The scrutiny of Cantlay’s personality and playing style has sparked a heated debate among fans, with some defending his strategic approach and others calling for more excitement and energy on the course.
