The Arnold Palmer drink was introduced to the world by the late golfer in the 1960s. Though many still drink the legendary beverage, Palmer once revealed the origins behind the creation of the iconic drink.

How was the Arnold Palmer drink created?

The late golfer was an admirer of iced tea. Palmer’s wife Winnie would frequently make the couple plenty of tea to feel refreshed. However, one fine day, the regular tea was made more than required. “My wife made a lot of iced tea for lunch”, said Palmer during an episode of ESPN’s 30 for 30.

Nonetheless, being the legend he is, the 7-time Major winner provided his wife with a unique suggestion. He said, “Hey, babe, I’ve got an idea. You make the iced tea and make a big pitcher, and we’ll just put a little lemonade in it and see how that works.’ We mixed it up, and I got the solution about where I wanted it and I put the lemonade in it”.

Arnold Palmer enjoyed the drink so much to an extent that he decided to take out the drink while playing golf in a thermos. “I had it for lunch after working on the golf course. I thought, ‘Boy, this is great, babe. I’m going to take it when I play golf. I’m going to take a thermos of iced tea and lemonade.’ ”

This was the foundation of the famous ice drink. From thereon, it was known as the ‘Arnold Palmer drink‘ to the world. The golfer also added how he initially felt awkward with a drink being named after himself. However, as years passed the drink became more iconic, similar to Palmer’s legacy in the sport.
