The golf world was filled with Phil Mickelson’s gambling history when it was discussed in Billy Walter’s book. The value of his gambling attempts and the money he allegedly lost alone had shocked fans.

In light of these allegations, Lanny Wadkins had once commented on his opinion of Phil Mickelson’s golf career. Needless to say, he was not happy with how ‘Lefty’ handled his career. In a recent interview, Wadkins was asked if he still felt the same, to which he had another long answer ready.

Lanny Wadkins, in a recent interview with Golf Week, spoke about his comments on Phil Mickelson and explained why he made them. The 73-year-old is still active and about with his firm that designs golf courses. During one of his promotional interviews, he received a question about Phil Mickelson and he just apparently got candid.

Wadkins claimed that the interview was supposed to be about one of his PGA wins and this topic just came up. However, he emphasized it was still true when he said Mickelson is “the most disappointing person in golf.”

Lanny Wadkins then explained how, in his opinion, Mickelson’s actions have caused problems and divisiveness in golf. He further added that Mickelson would “be gambling in a ditch somewhere” if not for his lasting career in golf.

Phil Mickelson’s gambling enthusiasm has been self-declared, and he has talked about how he keeps it bound within a limit. However, the allegations about his gambling history paint a totally different picture. He has been accused of losing over $100 million in gambling for a value of about $1 billion.

Before explaining why he felt disappointed with Mickelson, he spoke about how the golf community loves him. “I mean we all love Phil and watched him play. He was a rookie on my Ryder Cup team and played very well.”

Wadkins fondly recalled, and he even remembered Mickelson’s score. He also recollected the fact that Mickelson was not yet married to his wife back then, Amy.

Wadkins, however, claimed Phil Mickelson got everything he has because of golf and he didn’t give back to the sport. He expressed his disappointment over Mickelson for not respecting golf more. The eight-time Ryder Cup player sounded regretful about how ‘Lefty’ could have achieved greater heights if he were a little more responsible.
