The KPMG Women’s Irish Open concluded on Sunday. After a fierce battle, Smilla Tarning Soenderby went ahead and secured her maiden title. However, instead of her, another LPGA Pro from the Netherlands is making the headlines.
In a completely unexpected scenario, one of the nightmares for golfers came true, with the Dutch player at the receiving end. She was getting ready to have a playoff with the winner and one other but destiny had other plans for her.

During the last round of the KPMG Women’s Irish Open, Anne van Dam was heading toward Soenderby and Lisa Pettersson for a playoff. And she hopped into the golf cart with a tournament official for a ride to the 18th tee.
As a roped-in area appeared, the driver slowed down the cart a bit, giving van Dam enough time to lift the rope over both’s heads but once she did it and the cart picked up the pace, the golfing equipment at the back of the cart caught the rope, damaging one club severely. Following the horrific incident, Anne van Dam lost the first extra hole to Smilla Tarning Soenderby.
PGA pro David Foley took to X to comment on this horrible and dangerous scenario. Sharing the video of the incident, he wrote, “Wow how unfortunate is this and I’m lost for words @Annevandam driver snapped heading back to the 18th @GolfDromoland for playoff @LETgolf, @KPMG!”

Post the incident, the LPGA pro did not leave the game. Instead, she played with her 3-wood and teed off the par 5. The five-time LET winner also had a good look at an eagle after a splendid approach shot. But the all-important putt betrayed her and Soenderby walked away with her first LPGA title. Fans had a field day on social media after the incident went up.
The driver incident took the golf world by storm
A similar fate had befallen LIV golfer Bryson DeChambeau last year. Exactly a year ago, at the LIV Golf Invitational Chicago, during the final round at the 14th hole, he walked head-first into a gallery rope. Stunned from the incident, he bogeyed his next two holes. Many fans are reacting to the video posted by David Foley. One of them asked a very straightforward question.
Who’s at fault here ?

And another responded to the question indirectly. Who do you think should be held guilty here? Or was it just a bad day?
Was kinda her fault looking at the video 🫣

Some members of the golf world had their priorities straight. They felt bad for the driver.
I feel more sorry for the driver here than player..

One golf enthusiast was critical of the golfer for not having a replacement club.
As a non golfer, I have a hard time understanding why this person doesn't have a replacement club. I know the clubs are specially designed for each person, but she didn't have anything else?

And there was another who thought of the situation from every angle before making an informed opinion. Though he sympathized with the golfer.
The official didn’t do anything wrong. The player let go and didn’t make sure they’d cleared the bag. But still sucks big time either way

Commenting on the scale of the incident, another fan called it the “worst thing ever”. While the other one resorted to prayers, sympathizing with the golfer not a little.
This is like the worst thing ever
