Is John Daly's lifestyle a relic of the past or a testament to individuality in sports?

Max Homa has figured out the perfect balance between enjoying all the good things life has to offer while maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and he’s not alone. The golf world has undergone a significant transformation in recent decades, with fitness and wellness becoming a top priority for professionals, and for good reason. Golf may seem like a sport that doesn’t require much physical activity but it does throw its fair share of struggles at the athletes.

Gone are the days of neglecting physical health, thanks to the upcoming generation who is obsessed with leading a healthy life. In the recent episode of the podcast Join The Lobby, Max Homa explained his take on the topic and some juicy secrets of other golfer’s diet. According to Homa, as much as he loves being his own boss he also tries to follow a strict diet, at least during the tournaments. “I don’t drink during the week of a tournament, almost ever. Every once in a while, I have a little bit of wine, but I typically don’t drink. One reason is, if I have one, I like to have about 10”, he said.

Now, the thing is drinking during the tournament is pretty common among the golfers, and Homa also confirmed that by saying, “I know a lot of guys who drink the whole week”. Instead of booze, Homa tried to shift his focus to much healthier options like hydrating drinks. “I try to drink a lot of water and hydration packets”, he said. Later the golfer talked about the fact that how the times have changed and many golfers such as Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are making healthy choices by hitting the gym and getting that cardio done.

“Nowadays, you’d be hard-pressed to find somebody who isn’t in the gym or doing something to stay in shape. So, it definitely has changed, which I like”, he said.  But there’s no way when someone is talking about a diet and John Daly’s name doesn’t pop up and that’s exactly what happened in this interview as well.

Max Homa is surprised about John Daly’s diet, ‘I don’t know how he does it’

So we all know that golf legend John Daly has stunned fans with revelations about his alarming lifestyle choices, many times. Daly started smoking at just 19 years old and consumed two to two-and-a-half packs of cigarettes per day for nearly three decades. And don’t even get started on the golfer’s diet because that was equally troubling. Max Homa can’t help but shake his head in awe when thinking about Daly’s larger-than-life lifestyle.

The golfer’s diet is the stuff of legends or perhaps nightmares. “John Daly’s the most famous; he famously talks about his diet, like he smokes tons of cigarettes. He’s a big dude, he has his beautiful long swing, but he’s admittedly just talked about how he’ll take McDonald’s to the course. I don’t know how he does it, to be honest, because I feel terrible after some meals”, Homa exclaimed and well it is true, Daly’s diet is not everyone. But Daly’s unapologetic attitude towards his health habits is more than just a difference as it’s also a relic of a bygone era. “Thirty years ago, it was a different world,” Homa notes and it is true because as we all know back then golfers didn’t obsess over fitness like they do today.
