For Jordan Spieth fans, the 2025 WM Phoenix Open is bittersweet. The three-time major winner rolled back the years with a performance that was reminiscent of his serial winning stretch from 2015 to 2017, a period during which he won 3 majors. Spieth finished a brilliant T4 after scoring 16 under par across the 4 days.

But what would be disappointing for Spieth fans is that his last day was a tad disappointing compared to his first three days. He dropped two places after managing only 3 under par. Nevertheless, the American pro could take inspiration from his performance in Arizona. And it was not just his performance that was a blast from the past.

An incident happened during Day 4 where Spieth seemingly was caught in a déjà vu moment. Spieth’s wayward tee shot at the 17 hole found itself amongst the crowd. While that was commonplace, what was interesting and concerning was that the ball hit a spectator straight on the head. A bald spectator at that.

The spectator looked in dire straits as the ball caught him with the full force. He was dazed and seen sitting down, rubbing the spot with what was seemingly a tissue.

Nevertheless, this incident quickly captured the attention of the fans as they took a stab at the incident from different angles on social media.

Fans make a monkey of Jordan Spieth’s wayward shot

Is Jordan Spieth's comeback real, or just a flash in the pan after his recent performance?

Have an interesting take?

Netizens were quick to make their quips and notes. One user jokingly commented that the shot was so precise and powerful that the man, who was previously bald, had his hair shaved off. “Knocked his hair clean off!!” Another guy was more sympathetic to the cause. He funnily opined that the bald guy did not have any layer of protection on his head due to his lack of hair. Therefore, he was the last person that should have been involved in the incident. “Not the bald guy,” exclaimed the user.

Golf balls, even though tiny, possess significant force while landing, especially from a tee shot. The hardball must have hit the head with an enormous amount of force, making it possible for the person to incur serious injuries or concussions. A fan gently put down the typical reward on offer for such incidents by suggesting, “Signed glove ain’t worth that.”

Mariah Swigart, host of the golf podcast, “Meaningful Topics’, was in attendance during the incident. She also felt that the hit warranted much more than just a signed glove from Spieth. Swigart commented, “I hope he gets more than that – It looked brutal” Another fan quipped about the route Jordan Spieth took to reach the green. Of the 18 holes on the day, the 13-time PGA Tour winner hit the tee shot away from the fairway five times. “Fairways are overrated,” according to this fan.

Despite having to take the 2nd shot from the crowd, Spieth birdied the hole after the approach shot landed very close to the pin. Great mentality on display from the 2015 US Open winner. But it could also be a bit from experience. This was not the first time Spieth’s shot hit a fan. At the CJ Cup Byron Nelson in May 2024, Spieth’s drive on the 16th hole hit a fan sitting on the sidelines. The ball hit the fan’s elbow and rolled onto the fairway. The elbow had a massive wound, but Spieth made sure that there were no ill feelings. He gave the hurt fan, a signed golf ball and a $20 bill, as well as an incredible memory.

A similar incident also happened at the Player’s Championship in 2023. During the time, Jordan’s shot hit the knee of a fan before rolling onto the fairway. Spieth ended up giving the fan tickets for the weekend.

While this seems to be a regular unwanted incident for Spieth, fans expressed their delight in the fact that he is slowly getting back to his earlier form. The University of Texas alum had recently undergone surgery for a chronic wrist issue and after due rest and recovery is slowly getting back to his best. 997 Days after his last PGA Tour victory, Spieth will be looking to claim a trophy this year.
