Arnold Palmer was not just a golf player but left a legacy that continues even after his death. More than a golf legend, he was a legendary husband. Even after being a man worth $200 million, he lived a humble and down-to-earth life with no pretense.

Arnold remained married to his beloved wife, Winifred Walzer, for 45 years until death tore them apart. Their lives were nothing short of a romantic fairy tale. The 1954 US National Amateur was when he met the love of his life.

Arnold Palmer is known to be a veteran golfer and an acclaimed entrepreneur. But the least known fact about him is that he was a die-hard romantic. His first love story actually did justice to the quote, “till death do us apart.” After being married for 45 years, Arnold lost his wife to cancer in 1999. She was his silent counselor, for she used to listen to Palmer while he measured the pros and cons himself. According to an article by Vault, while reminiscing about Walzer, he said, “If Winnie were alive, maybe I would have never gotten involved with the Callaway driver.”

When asked about his wife, his eyes welled up, and he remembered October 1998. Narrating the story, he said, “I had finally gotten a clean bill of health on my prostate cancer when we got a call that now Winnie had cancer.” His heart ached while he proceeded further: “That was in late October, in 1998.” We always thought she was going to make it, right up to the end. She was so strong. She had so much faith. We set up a hospital room for her in our home in Latrobe. One of the last things she told me was, “Get on with your life.”

She had everything prepared for him, even her own funeral. Speaking about it further, Palmer added, “I couldn’t talk at her funeral. Winnie had written out her own funeral service, what music she wanted played, what prayers read. Turns out, she had done all that planning a year before she died.” What a great team they made! As he spoke about her, there was a void in Arnold’s voice, as if something was missing, something was empty, or something was simply incomplete.

The legend also left all of his fans on September 25, 2016 due to a cardiovascular disease. But he has given his fans lots of memories that will surely last a lifetime.
