Certain players have left an unprecedented mark on the history of the game of golf. The case is especially true when it comes to the veterans of the game like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. The two have been present in the sport for more than a decade now. They boast a long list of accolades and records that are hard to break or achieve by a normal golfer.
However, what happens when these players are rewarded for the effect that they have on the sport as opposed to others? Wouldn’t others be dissatisfied with the same? That is exactly what happened as a certain PGA Tour pro took to his social media to express his displeasure with the current Player Impact Program, dubbing it as nothing short of “ridiculous!”

As per the 2023 Player Impact Program (PIP), 20 members of the PGA Tour including Woods and McIlroy along with other 18 players were rewarded. They were given a share of the $100 million bonus pool based on the amount of “positive interest” that they managed to generate in the men’s circuit. However, such an initiative was not welcomed by many including Nathan Lashley.
The 40-year-old shared a post on his Instagram handle expressing his dissatisfaction with the how the money was spent. He uploaded a photo of the letter addressed to the members of the tour from Jason Gore, the Executive Vice President of the body, as he questioned the leadership of the PGA Tour.
Adding a caption to the picture, he asked the community about whether they knew what “PIP on the PGA Tour is” all the while asking the fans for their thoughts regarding the $100 million that was distributed among the 20 players on the circuit. Elaborating on the same, the pro said, “There’s 150-200 members of the PGA Tour and they just spent $100 million on 20 players,” as he labeled the act as “ridiculous,” and “an absolute kick in the face to the rest of the PGA Tour players.”

Many in the community do not have an idea of what the PIP actually is. After taking a look at the post shared by Lashley, it would be quite natural for the increase in curiosity among the fans regarding the program.

The PIP was first introduced in the year 2020-21 to honor and award the members who were able to bring about the most impact on the game, especially on the PGA Tour. The players were judged on an “objective measurement criteria” and certified by Grant Thornton. In 2022-23, the athletes were selected based on the MARC General Population Awareness and MARC Golf Fan Awareness Survey Data.

The prize pool was jacked up to $100 million in 2022 for 2023. However, as per the Policy Board Meeting that took place in Spring, next year’s PIP would see only $50 million being distributed among the top ten players while the rest of the difference would be reallocated to the various “player programs.”

One can view this as a part of the Tour’s effort to focus on the players who have benefited the league through their association and hard work. However, this has led to a rise in dissatisfaction among many of the other PGA Tour golfers including Lashley.
