Is there a change on the way for the DP World Tour? Keith Pelley, who has been the chief executive of the European circuit since 2015, is reportedly set to be hired by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Moreover, the tour official would supposedly be joining the parent company of the Maple Leafs, Raptors, TFC, and Argonauts as their new president and chief executive, as per sources. This has indubitably left the golfing body in an unforeseen and unexpected situation.
The deal, as of now, is expected to be announced on Thursday, the day Pelley will turn 60. He would be succeeding Cynthia Devine, MLSE’s acting CEO, ever since Michael Friisdahl’s departure, the latter of whom was the president and CEO of the company from 2015 to 2022. The organization started searching for an executive last year and has finally set its eyes on the CEO of the European tour as its next hire.

Keith Pelley’s departure, a loss for DP World Tour?
The 60-year-old has been an integral part of the European circuit ever since he took office as the chief executive of the body. He has spearheaded many changes in the game of golf, which has cemented his position as one of the sport’s “most powerful and influential executives.”
The official, back in 2017, introduced a new team event consisting of sixteen groups of two people each from various countries known as GolfSixes. The golfers, during the six-hole event, would wear microphones during play and would be greeted by “fireworks at the first tee.” What’s more, a year later, in Austria, he introduced a new 40-second shot clock in a bid to improve and increase the pace of gameplay at the Shot Clock Masters.

The soon-to-be DP World Tour’s ex-CEO, surprisingly, was all up for professional athletes in the sport wearing shorts during practice rounds as opposed to the traditional viewpoint of the game. In addition, he was also an advocate for various other changes to golf, including music being played on ranges, a par-3 tournament under artificial lights at nighttime, and a variety of promotions on social media. Besides, his unafraid stance on sharing ideas that can lead to a change in the sport has undoubtedly led to him becoming a key figure in negotiations with the Saudi government during the framework agreement and merger.
Well, with Pelley, who has helmed many developments in the sport, set to join MLSE, it truly does paint a worrisome picture for the European circuit. Nevertheless, the community would be eagerly looking forward to what awaits the DP World Tour following his exit.
