Is Keegan Bradley the right man for the job? The captain of Team U.S.A. in the Ryder Cup has been a part of a few controversies ever since the announcement of his hiring. The controversial decision by the PGA Tour certainly took everyone by surprise.
Many believed that it would be Tiger Woods who would be taking up the mantle. However, the GOAT later clarified that he could not commit to the time required to manage the responsibility of being the captain.
Coming back to Keegan Bradley, one of the biggest issues he is facing is trying to do a little too much at the Ryder Cup. Just like Woods, Bradley is also quite enthusiastic about the prestigious tournament. But according to an insider, he may also be a little too ambitious.

Dame Laura Davies joined The 19th Uncut podcast as she discussed various topics regarding her career and professional golf. During one of the segments, Davies mentioned how she never wanted to be a captain at the Solheim Cup as she loved playing the tournament too much. She was complemented by one of the other guests that she would have been the most natural and obvious choice to be the captain as she would have been great at the role.
Davies mentioned how even though she was 58 back then, she still had the “stubbornness” to think that she was a good player. She did clarify that she had actually stopped being a good player back when she was 53. That’s when she mentioned, “If you’re going to be the captain, you can’t still be thinking you’re a player.”
That’s when the topic of Keegan Bradley wanting to be a playing captain arose. Davies said, “It’s like Keegan. How’s he gonna do that role?”, suggesting that managing both responsibilities at the same time is impossible. She further added, “If he’s playing well, he could actually be in that Ryder Cup.”
Mentioning what Bradley had said previously, the 61-year-old said, “He said he was going to play. But I’d be really surprised because it’s just two completely different roles,” indicating that a pro can’t be thinking as a captain and a player at the same time. Possibly, Bradley might also not be unbiased in his decisions as a captain.

It’s interesting to hear from someone who had the opportunity to be in that position but saw the logic behind not pursuing it. But does Keegan Bradley have the same clarity of thought? Let’s see what he has said recently to determine that.

Keegan Bradley’s goals for the Ryder Cup 2025
Being elected as the captain of Team U.S.A. comes with a load of burden for any individual. The individual at the helm must be ready to make impromptu decisions for the entire team to gain an advantage at any moment on the course. That means the captain will need to have an eye on the entire field. Doing that on top of focusing on your own game is definitely a mountainous task for any one person. But Keegan Bradley believes that he can fulfill that role.
During an interview for ASAP Sports, Bradley stated, “I would love to be a playing captain. No one has really had the opportunity that I’ve had.” Further elaborating on the playing captain position, he also said, “It’s never really had a chance to happen,” while throwing Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods in the mix as well. He said that either of the two legends would have taken the opportunity to be playing captains if they were given the captaincy when they were younger while indirectly comparing himself to Woods & Mickelson. Interestingly, something similar had happened in the 2024 Presidents Cup as well where Bradley had qualified to be a player while still being a captain’s assistant. In the end, team captain Jim Furyk decided to replace him with Brandt Snedeker for the position while allowing the former to play.
