“Golf is not everyone’s cup of tea.” An emotion that has stood the test of time, irrespective of who’s showed up. In 2019, fans got a first-hand example when an unsuspecting Zach Johnson faced what can inarguably be called the most embarrassing moment in his career. The veteran was attempting a practice swing on the 13th hole when he accidentally hit the ball, causing it to bounce off of the tee marker and land five yards ahead. “Oh, sh-t,” was Johnson’s immediate reaction. But the impact of that blooper traveled far and wide, showing just how many curveballs the sport can throw at you. Still not convinced? Well, just ask Barstool Sports’ Trent Ryan, and he’ll probably write an essay about it—especially after what happened during the Players Championship Creator Classic.

With a course already known for its difficulty, the TPC Sawgrass witnessed several guests trying their hands at playing. Notably, this was the series’ second event and the first at the Pete Dye venue, which saw 10 golf content creators compete for eight holes of stroke play, Nos. 10-17, followed by a playoff at the par-3 17th. However, as Trent—who won Barstool Sports content creators’ qualifier to earn the media house a spot—attempted to make a putt on the hole, what unfolded next was pure cinema that even PGA Tour’s official Instagram page couldn’t stop from sharing. That, too, in slow motion!

In the video that went viral, Ryan was seen taking a swing from the rough. But instead of hitting the ball, he literally sent a chunk of the course flying, while the golf ball stayed right where it was. What’s more? The golf influencer even faltered and fell down making the situation all the more hilarious. Well, the main highlight came a few hours later, and it’s safe to say, the community had too much fun. And Justin Thomas? Well, he was over the moon…

On March 12, PGA Tour shared a hilariously edited video showing the content creator falling and then falling in slow motion on all of their social media handles. Captioned, “Condolences to our agronomy team,” it wasn’t long before Thomas commented, “Thank you oh so much for making my day.” Notably, this isn’t the first time Remember when Thomas’ online persona was on full display…

Remember when he couldn’t help but troll Talor Gooch after he made an eyebrow-raising comparison between LIV Golf’s atmosphere and the Ryder Cup. The incident occurred after Gooch was interviewed on the greens at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland, Oregon, where he had said, “I haven’t played a Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, but I can’t imagine there’s a whole hell of a lot of difference.” The two Ryder Cups and two Presidents Cup veteran took to Instagram with a laugh, posting: “I’ve seen some funny stuff online, but this is one of the better ones.”

As for the Creator Classic debacle, soon after, South Korean star An Byeong-hun also shared re-shared the video on X, writing, “After they fill up with sands, they should have a rake next to it. He just created a mini bunker.”

Even Ryan poked fun at himself in a separate post, expressing, “A lesser man shatters both ankles here. Not me.” Looks like the golfing world just got itself a meme! As for Trent Ryan’s performance, he posted an octuple-bogey 11 on one hole and finished with a 29-over 61 across eight holes. Despite the rough round, Ryan made the most of the experience, soaking in the moment and even celebrating with his caddie after finally hitting the island green on his fifth attempt. His round also included a quintuple-bogey 10 at the par-5 16th hole.

Reflecting on the tough day, Ryan said, “We kept saying, ‘It’s an 8-iron, it’s an 8-iron,’ but after a few tries, we switched to the 7-iron. Normally, you wouldn’t be happy with an 11, but the crowd was cheering me on, so I had fun with it.”

Nonetheless, the TPC Sawgrass did indeed witness a lot of hilarious moments in the past. One from last year still makes everyone chuckle.

Johnson Wagner’s classic mimicry fail

Last year, Johnson Wagner’s career took a wild turn at TPC Sawgrass. No, he didn’t win a tournament, but he did something even better—he threw golf balls. You might remember this quirky moment when Wagner, trying to mimic Rory McIlroy’s splash into the water on No. 7, threw a golf ball into the hazard during a “Live From” segment at The PLAYERS. It was educational, it was fun, and most importantly, it had everyone laughing.

Fast forward to this week, where Wagner’s now a fan favorite, not for his golf skills but for his hilarious recreations of iconic moments from the tournament. But, of course, it wouldn’t be Johnson Wagner without a little drama. On Monday night, he tackled Hal Sutton’s legendary “BE THE RIGHT CLUB TODAY!” shot from the 2000 edition. Easy, right? Well, not so much. With the wind blowing like crazy, Wagner’s shot quickly went from a tribute to a comedy show, and let’s just say it didn’t go as planned.

While it might not have been pretty, it was certainly entertaining. What’s your favorite TPC Sawgrass moment so far? Let us know in the comments!
