Patrick Cantlay, along with top instructor Jamie Mulligan recently coached a group of young golfers from California. Golf Digest posted a video of the coaching lessons that included some of the best junior players in the area. During the session, Patrick Cantlay talked about his weekly routine that ensures that he stays sharp for every PGA Tour event.
When he reached the point of his schedule for the weekend, Cantlay shared something that would excite a lot of fans. “Friday, Saturday, Sunday; for the most part, I’m playing,” said Cantlay as he revealed who he practices with. He went on to add, “I’ll go find the most competitive game I can find. Usually, that’s Xander (Schauffele), JT (Justin Thomas), and Rickie (Fowler).”
Getting the opportunity to play alongside these elite players every week must be a dream for any pro. But it’s such a norm in Cantlay’s life that he just simply said, “They all live close to me.“, explaining why they play together.
Patrick Cantlay went on to say that the winning prize is not what drives them as they might be playing merely for ‘$20‘. But what is important for them is the fact that they are kept on the edge. He said that their competitive nature kicks in and ‘no one wants to lose‘. “We really really want to beat the crap out of each other,” said Cantlay as he emphasized the atmosphere on the course when they are playing. Cantlay said that such an environment is the key because “you’re kicking in, you’re focusing. ‘I don’t wanna lose. I’m gonna have to bury the last four holes and I know it. Because I’m playing against world-class players.’”
