Did Max Homa's blunder just hand Justin Thomas the psychological edge for the Presidents Cup?

Max Homa started the 2024 season with two top 15s at the Sentry and the Farmers Insurance Open. But since then, his performance has been on a decline. The 33-year-old missed three cuts in the seventeen he played, but in all the events he made it to the weekend, Homa was consistently out of the top positions. Even in the FedEx Cup playoffs, the 6-time PGA Tour winner was the bottommost at the St. Jude Championship, T33 at the BMW Championship, and just could not play in the East Lake.

Starting the FedEx Cup Dall season, most expected that Homa’s form would take a turn for the good. But it seems that things are just not going in favor of the PGA Tour pro. Homa was in the field of the newly named Procore Championship played in the Napa Valley and even in the diluted field, could not make the cut. After shooting 71 and 72 in two rounds, Homa missed the 3 under cutline as he was 1 under 143.

It counts as the fourth missed cut and right before the Presidents Cup starts, a nightmare for the pro. Just a few days ago, Homa’s pick by captain Jim Furk was questioned as he did not have a better season as compared to JT. Now, as he goes down on another bad performance, it potentially hints toward the fact that Thomas might have been the better choice in the end. Even JT’s good friend, Smylie Kaufman, warned that if the USA lost in the Presidents Cup, it would all come down to the captain’s pick and snubbing JT.

Seeing Homa fail again and that too before he faced the International team, made him garner a lot of criticism from the golf world as they doubted what his form would be in the Presidents Cup in just two weeks.

Netizens tear apart Max Homa after missing the cut

In the last four starts, Max Homa’s finishes looked like this: T43, T70, T33, and a missed cut. Undoubtedly, Homa’s performance had been on a slow decline and has performed poorly in mostly every event. Seeing him perform worst again, this fan frustratingly said, “Max Homa is a**.” Is there a way that Team USA could be changed just 12 days before the Presidents Cup? It has never been done before and could not be followed now either.

However, one user expected that Max Homa should not be in the Presidents Cup team representing the USA. And although there was no way that the captain would be able to remove him now, they said, “If Homa had any self respect he’d remove himself from the presidents cup team.” Another golf enthusiast reciprocated the same feelings that other fans had for Homa and what they expected would be the outcome if he played the Presidents Cup, which was that he would probably not win any points for Team USA. They tagged the 6-time PGA Tour winner and told him, @Maxhoma another missed cut, shouldn’t you just withdraw from the President’s Cup?”

Did Max Homa's blunder just hand Justin Thomas the psychological edge for the Presidents Cup?

Have an interesting take?

Comparatively, Justin Thomas had a better season than his good friend, Max Homa. At the very least, JT played in all three FedEx Cup playoff events, and he finished T14 at the TOUR Championship, where Homa did not play. Hence, another fan was enraged at Jim Furk as he was the one who picked Homa over JT and said, @jimfuryk made horrible decision intake @Maxhoma. He has no game right now. I have no doubt he will come back, but I don’t see it happening in the next two weeks. I wonder if Furyk even watches golf anymore.”

Lastly, one viewer did not appear as angry at Homa but still shared that the golfer did not seem apt for the Presidents Cup if he missed the cut at the Procore Championship. They compared it to how Thomas was also not ready for Ryder Cup last year, when Team USA lost against the Europeans, saying, “

I like Max but his inclusion in Presidents Cup is even worse than the JT pick for Ryder Cup last year. He’s at Procore “rounding his game” in a lesser field and he’s tied 114.”

Will Max Homa’s performance get better in the next two weeks for Team USA? He and the fans surely hope so, with the team’s eyes set on victory.
