The Hero World Challenge begins at the Albany Golf Club this weekend. While many have fond memories of the Tiger Woods-hosted tournament, a few have butterflies in their stomach. For Jordan Spieth, an embarrassing episode from last year will remain fresh in his mind. Additionally, he got a timely nudge from golf buddy, Justin Thomas, ahead of the tournament in a hilarious clip.

Justin Thomas reminds Jordan Spieth of tee boxes

With the competition commencing on Thursday, most of the participating golfers were already in attendance. Among them was Justin Thomas, who, presumably during his practice, took some time out to show the course around to one of his friends.

In a humorous tweet aimed at Spieth, Thomas panned his camera over the 9th hole of the Albany course. “Number 9 tee, Jordan. Just remember, just play from over the tee marker’s are,” Thomas said while taking a jibe at his friend. “So today the back tee [pointing to the tee], we are gonna play this tee. Not gonna play that tee, just play from wherever the tee markers are.”

But ahead of the tournament, why did Thomas take the jibe at his friend? The reason stems down to the fortuitous mistake by Spieth and Swedish golfer, Henrik Stenson, in the last edition of the event.

On the last day of the event, the pair of golfers had just finished sending their balls on their way from the ninth tee when the rules officials raised a query. “We went down to our balls and the rules official said, did you hit off the right tee box? We looked back and we saw that there was another one forward and left,” Stenson said.

As it happened, the event organizers had moved the tee box on the ninth hole. Unaware of the change, Spieth and Stenson were forced to replay their shots. Additionally, they were docked two shots for the alleged misconduct.

“I actually didn’t think we were going to get penalized because it’s a charity event, but then I realized there’s world ranking involved and all that,” Spieth had said. This time around, with the counsel of his friend Thomas, Spieth might be better off.
