So, we all know that Jordan Spieth underwent surgery on his left wrist a few weeks ago and thankfully it was successful. The injury occurred when the golfer was trying to repair a torn tendon while playing with his son in May 2023, can you imagine the pain he must be going through for a year? Well, the golfer did know something was wrong because initially, Spieth was attempting to recover through rest, but that obviously did not work out.

The injury failed to heal fully and the pain intensified throughout the 2024 season. The golfer has now gotten the surgery and is resting. Spieth will likely miss the remainder of 2024 but expects to return by the new year as the rehabilitation plan that he is following includes recovery, physical therapy, and weeks of rest. Sure, the golfer is off the course for a long period of time but does that mean we will not get any more fun stories? No, of course not!

So recently, Spieth’s caddie Michael Greller went on Golf.com’s YouTube show called The Scoop and talked about how his journey as a caddie began with a chance encounter at the 2010 US Amateur at Chambers Bay. Let us explain, the 2010 US Amateur was the place where he met Justin Thomas and now you’d ask what does that have to do with becoming a caddie? Well, Thomas was the one who would later introduce him to Spieth and little did Greller know, that this meeting would change his life. “I was kind of golfing, caddying in the summertime at Chambers Bay. I got hooked up with Justin Thomas in 2010 at the US Am, and Justin and I hit it off”, said Greller recalling the moment.

But here’s the thing, According to Greller Thomas didn’t want him to caddie for Spieth for the most hilarious reason. “He actually didn’t give me Jordan – I still have the text messages. He’s like, ‘Jordan’s going to win this thing and just rub it in your face,’ because, you know, they were pretty competitive back then”, he said. Thomas wanted Greller to caddie for Gavin Hall, however, when Gavin Hall broke his wrist playing basketball, Thomas relented and connected Greller with Spieth and that’s where it all started.

That phone call led to a lasting partnership. With only two days’s notice, Greller teamed up with Spieth and watched him dominate the tournament. Their collaboration has only been more successful in the last 12 years, ever since Spieth turned pro in 2012 after leaving the University of Texas. However, like many things in life, this partnership also went through a rough patch when Greller’s dad died back in 2019.

No one can ever predict when a tragedy is going to strike them and that’s exactly what happened with Greller when he was caddying for Spieth in 2019. While playing at the WGC-Mexico Championship, Jordan Spieth’s team faced a sudden change as his trusted caddie had to leave the tournament due to the heartbreaking loss of his father, John Greller. The Golf Channel broke the news in 2019 and it was later confirmed by tournament officials.

Spieth’s mother Christine Spieth expressed condolences on X and wrote,  “Heavy heart for Michael and his family… Bear was a great father, husband, and grandfather. Heaven gained another golf angel.” Greller has been Spieth’s trusted bagman since 2013 and has shared 11 PGA Tour titles, including three major championships, so while this was hard for both of them, they made it through and became even more stronger.
