As golf writers, we can’t judge you if you did not recognize Bones before his caddying spell with Justin Thomas, but as golf fans, Well, we still won’t, but we really could, especially considering that the man once caddied for the legendary Phil Mickelson.
Phil and Bones could probably contest for one of the best duos to ever grace the tour if golf was ever considered a team sport. In their two decades of togetherness, the duo won five majors and 41 PGA Tour events.
Bones is one of the most successful caddies of all time in the golf world. However, after hanging up his bag in 2017 and splitting ways with Mickelson, Mackay went on to work as a commentator until Justin Thomas’ latent talent pulled him and his bag out of retirement. Their first stint together was in 2018, when Jim came out of retirement to caddie for a week to fill in for Justin’s regular bagman, Jimmy Johnson.

Where did he get the nickname ‘Bones’?
Legend or rumor has it that Jim got the nickname from veteran golf legend Fred Couples during his 1990 tour season. Fred started calling him ‘Bones’. This was because he could never remember Jim’s name but would always notice his tall and lanky 6-foot-4-inch frame.
