The internet can be both a boon and a curse. And a golfer, who recently had the biggest success of his career got caught up in an unnecessary turmoil. Michael Block became a household name with his ace shot at the 2023 PGA Championship, and this overnight success forced heaps of limelight his way. While attending one of the many back-to-back scheduled interviews, Block made a bizarre confession that led fans and an American golfer to lambast him online.

46-year-old Michael Block, was smothered with public attention and fan love for the past few days. The club pro was congratulated by many for shooting an ace and finishing at T15 at the last major, leaving behind many seasoned golfers. And not just that, but his down-to-earth personality and heartening comments were the reason fans found him even more appealing.

But Block couldn’t escape the human tendency of making mistakes, and went on to make a comment about his on-course partner from the PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy’s teeing distance. When asked in a podcast about his and the Irishman’s game, he said, “What I would shoot from where Rory hits it would be stupid. I think I’d be one of the best players in the world.” The golf enthusiasts found it to be disrespectful towards the four-time major winner who has been ranked World No. 1 nine times! It was not just the golf buffs, but also Justin Thomas’ good friend Smylie Kaufman, who found Block’s comparison to be ridiculous.

Kaufman posted a video of himself and another folk discussing this situation. He expressed his opinions on the number of interviews Block had with the media considering his “Cinderella story,” and how the media pumped overconfidence in him saying, “That is an insane amount of media to do.” He further talked about how good of a player McIlroy is and said, “If Rory had to hit it from where Michael Block hit it, he’d beat the cr*p out of him.

Amidst everyone hating ruthlessly on Michael Block, golf social media sensation, Paige Spiranac stood up for him. Spiranac defended Block and expressed that she felt bad for him. She also expressed her understanding of being pressured by the media and fans’ expectations for performing well.
