2018 was a good year for Phil Mickelson at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He finished the opening round of the event with opening-round 66. The score put the pro golfer into contention. However, he was the talk of the town for entirely different reasons. His moves in a commercial were attracting the limelight because they came as a surprise to his fans.
A commercial by Mizzen and Main featuring the major championship winner was going viral. The company produced Mickelson’s button-downed shirt and released a video in which the pro golfer was dancing. The commercial set the internet on fire after its release. The pro golfer spilt the beans on why he did the commercial because it was not like the former PGA pro would do.

Why did Phil Mickelson agree to do the commercial?
They could not convince Mickelson to do the commercial, even though he saw other videos. The commercial included dance, and that was not a piece of cake for the pro golfer. “They showed some of the videos like they had done like with Tim Tebow and J.J. Watt, and they said, ‘We have this idea about dancing.’ Obviously, you know, it’s not my—it’s not the thing I’m most comfortable doing,” Explained Mickelson. But then his wife, Amy, convinced him. She asked him to do a worm and feature in the commercial. “You should just tell them that you know how to do the worm.”
And when she entered the conversation, that was sit. Amy convinced the PGA tour winner to do the commercial. He thought it would be a unique experience to laugh at himself while making those moves. The golfer said, “So after she said that it was over; we were doing it. I don’t know; I think it’s fun to laugh at yourself.” It was something he never expected he would do. It was entirely out of his comfort zone, but either way, he did it.
However, the whole experience seemed too much for him. He was overwhelmed by stepping out of his comfort zone. Even though, if you look at the commercial, it would look effortless, as if Mickelson did not have to put much work into it. However, in reality, it was too much for him. “I mean, it was a lot —it was a lot for me to get even just that much out of me. It looks pretty benign, but it wasn’t easy,” said the LIV defector.

Were his kids onboard?
Even though the video was shot a month before its release, the memories stayed with Mickelson. However, it took 15-20 takes and an hour for the golfer to shoot the video. Despite all his efforts and stepping out of his comfort zone, his kids were not on board. According to the PGA champion, his kids were “embarrassed”. But at the same time, his kids were also used to it.
