Leading the US Open into the weekend, Rickie Fowler remains unshaken on the chart boards with one final round to prove his might on Sunday. Tying with him is Wyndham Clark and tagging behind in the third position is Irishman Rory McIlroy.
A few months ago, Fowler had opened up in a podcast on why he slows things down when he’s playing in final groups, and there is a fair chance that he could be doing it on Sunday as well.

Without a doubt, the US Open of 2023 belongs to Rickie Fowler. The underdog of golf who has been underestimated for the last several years because he hasn?t been able to score a ‘major’ victory. But that doesn?t mean Fowler lacks what it takes to be there.
And this is the first time in 9 years that Fowler will be in the final round with Rory after they played each other at the 2014 Open Championship.
In March earlier this year, Fowler was a guest on the Golf podcast ?Beyond the Clubhouse? hosted by Garrett Johnston where he opened up about his preference for going slow in the final round and his experience of a previous final round.
Garrett Johnston shared the highlight of Fowler’s interview from the podcast on Twitter today.
Fowler plays in the final Sun group in a major @usopengolf for 1st time since he played w/@McIlroyRory in the 2014 Open Championship.
I spoke w/Rickie this spring about what he learned from that and how he slows things down in final group situations.https://t.co/mGnFhYZQ2Q pic.twitter.com/E9exEcvPZp

Fowler had described his approach thus: ?…For the most part that?s every day out here but especially final round, you kinda just stay within yourself, make sure you feel like you are walking a little bit slower just and going through things a little bit slower just because sometimes you get going a bit quick in the moment.?

Face off with Rory McIlroy in the final round
Fowler is one of the fastest on PGA but trust him to change his ways if it serves him right. It could be his way of keeping his mind cool amidst all tension. And the faceoff between McIlroy and Fowler that comes after 9 years has raised the tension even higher with both sides ready to play their cards right. After all, it is a matter of prestige now.
Of course, all eyes will be on him in the final round. The last time Fowler had come this close to victory was in 2014 when he managed to be in the top five in all four majors but sadly couldn?t win. But perhaps slow play could be just the thing that could make Fowler win his first major.
