Jason Day finished off round 2 in Charlotte, North Carolina, with yet another outstanding performance. He took the T2 position alongside Rory McIlroy, at 7-under 135. The pair are only four strokes behind the leader, Xander Schauffele. After such a stunning round, Day was bound to grab the spotlight. And he did. But not for his gameplay!
Despite being in contention to grab his first win of the season, Day’s headlines made no mention of his performance. Instead, the entire focus was on one thing: his outfit, which sparked a massive debate in the golf world.

During Round two of the Well Fargo Championship, Day sported a ’90s collection. He wore crème-colored baggy pants and a brown button-down short-sleeved shirt with white stripes and a chest pocket. Moreover, with brown shades and a white cap, he completed his retro look, which, when NUCLR Golf posted about it, instantly went viral!

When Todd Lewis, a reporter from Golf Channel, asked Day to describe his look, he made it clear that he had planned it to be retro. Day exclaimed, “I feel like it’s a little bit of like a throwback to some old school stuff, like this is very, I was saying earlier, like Tiger Woods on the bottom, Mr. Hogan on top.” And of course, there is no denying this fact. The pants are pretty similar to what Woods wore in his prime days, whereas the uppers have a touch of the mid-20th century.
The Australian recently switched apparel sponsors from Nike to Malbon, becoming their first golf brand ambassador at the beginning of this year. Since then, be it at The Sentry or even at Augusta, his choice of clothing has managed to create a stir.
Does Day look stunning or horrendous?
Interestingly, fans were not only not on the same page when it came to Day’s outfit, but they were in different books altogether. And while Day himself didn’t care too much for others’ opinions, which he cemented when he said, “It’s been nice to be able to wear some stuff that looks a little different to the norm out here. Whether you like it or not is your opinion,” fans certainly didn’t shy away from sharing theirs.
While one stated that he looked extremely cool and even claimed that all he was missing was a cigar and he’d look like a golfer “chillin'” on a beach, others were of the complete opposite opinion and suggested that he looked shabby and plain “bad.” The praise came from one who wrote, “If only they allowed cigars, bro is chillin’ and should be golfing in the Caribbean.” On the other hand, the hate followed, with him straightaway comparing his outfit to Shawshank Redemption’s famed librarian turned juvenile, Brooks. The fan strongly suggested his recent partnership change was for the money, and it certainly wasn’t for the look. “They got him looking like Brooks from Shawshank Redemption. Clearly a money move by Jason Day because no one would choose to look that bad.”

“Just join LIV already,” stated one fan. Now, while it’s possible they were dishing out hate towards Day for his missed cuts, like at the Farmers Insurance Open and the Texas Children Houston Open, and 0 wins this season, it could also be that the fan wanted to see the Australian star be able to be more flexible with his fits. LIV Golf, after all, is far more lenient with what their players wear, with many like Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau even opting to wear shorts on the course.
Unlike some fans who were against Day’s sponsor change, others were in favor of it. After Viktor Hovland took over the internet with his viral pink and green floral polo at the Masters, after switching to J. Lindeberg, followed by his bright orange-themed outfit, it now seems like Jason Day’s outfits too are steadily reaching a point where some of the audience are liking them. Both for its look and its comfort.
“This one is amazing,” wrote one, making it clear that they loved it. For another, it was perhaps the baggy part that was appealing, for they claimed it looked “comfortable.” And of course, considering it takes 4-6 hours for a round of golf, comfort takes the forefront.

Adding to the confused debate, one fan compared his attire to the famous comedy golf movie ‘Caddyshack’. The movie shows the characters dressed in all sorts of funny, striped, and unmatched clothes on the course. However, the fan didn’t intend for it to be a troll! They controversially stated that they liked it. “Looks like something out of caddy shack and I’m here for it.”
Slowly but surely, Jason Day’s outfit is gaining traction with the online golf community, be it good or bad. Regardless, one thing is certain: he is bringing back old-school golf to the greens!
