Viktor Hovland, speaking after his impressive performance at the Tour Championship was asked why winning the FedEx Cup worth $75 million is so important to him.
Hovland expressed his admiration for the prestigious list of past winners on the trophy. He acknowledged that while the tournament itself might not be a long event, the journey to get there requires consistent good play. Winning the FedExCup and having his name alongside the great players who have won before would be a remarkable achievement for him.
When asked about his six-shot lead at the tournament, Hovland admitted that he couldn’t recall the last time he held such a substantial lead in a tournament. He said “I can’t remember I’ve led by that many shots, so I guess it’s a little unfamiliar.”
He was asked about his plans for the evening leading up to the next day’s tee time. Hovland mentioned that the tee times were scheduled to be earlier, so he wouldn’t have to wait as long between waking up and playing. His plan included “just jump in the ice bath and get some physio done and just go to bed.”

Reflecting on his current form, Hovland admitted that he had never felt this complete as a player before. He said “I don’t think I’ve ever played this well before.” Hovland went on to provide details about his approach shots on specific holes. On hole 12, he used a gap wedge from 122 meters followed by a sand wedge on hole 13 from 109 meters.

He mentioned that his short game had improved significantly, and he didn’t need to hit every shot perfectly to contend. He felt more confident in recovering from challenging situations and staying competitive even when he wasn’t hitting his best shots.
