Just Days After an Unfortunate Announcement, ‘Discouraging’ Jordan Spieth Update Fuels Speculations Ahead of the PGA Championship

Fans of Jordan Spieth received a disappointing update a few days ago, with the World No. 10 announcing his withdrawal from the ongoing AT&T Byron Nelson event. Taking to Twitter, the golfer cited his injured wrist as the reason behind his abrupt decision.

With the year’s second major kicking off in a couple of days, fans are now rightfully worried about the PGA Tour pro. Now, the latest update about Spieth has added further fuel to speculations surrounding his appearance in the upcoming PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth’s upcoming schedule raises doubts

Spieth’s last major win came in 2017, when he defeated Matt Kuchar to claim the Open Championship title. The 29-year-old is now just one PGA Championship win away from joining the ranks of players who have completed a career grand slam.

But will he be competing in the major’s 105th edition next week? While Spieth has qualified for the 156-player field, doubts continue to loom over his appearance. In fact, a “discouraging” update by Adam Schupak of Golfweek has led to the 3-time major winner’s fans expecting the worst.

Per the tweet, the golfer is not scheduled to appear for the “pre-tourney interview” ahead of the major. Given his injury-related struggles and the hunt for his 4th major title, Schupak believes Spieth “would talk if playing.” 

There has been no announcement from the player’s side yet, and he is still very much a part of the highly competitive field for the PGA Championship. In his last major appearance at the Augusta National, Spieth performed extremely well, finishing at T4. He followed it with a runner-up finish at the 2023 RBC Heritage event at Hilton Head. But his latest outing at the Wells Fargo Championship was a forgettable one, where he failed to make the cut.

Jordan Spieth withdraws from PGA Tour event after injury

The AT&T Byron Nelson event is currently underway at Texas’ TPC Craig Ranch.  But an injury to his left wrist kept last year’s runner-up, Spieth, from competing in his hometown event this week. Taking to Twitter last Monday, the golfer wrote, “Over the weekend, I had severe pain in my left wrist… The AT&T Byron Nelson means the absolute world to me and I’m disappointed to miss it this week.” Spieth further mentioned that he was monitoring his recovery on a “week-to-week” basis.

The 13-time PGA Tour winner has great memories at the Byron Nelson. After all, his pro tournament debut came at the event’s 2010 edition, wherein he played on a sponsor’s exemption as a 16-year-old amateur. Since then, he has competed in the event nine times, with his best performance coming in 2022.
