Players are much excited as the 2023 Wyndham Championship is just a week ago. The tournament is all set to take place at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Being the seventh oldest on the PGA Tour apart from the Majors, it is a much anticipated event among the golfing community.

While players around the world are gearing up to compete for the title, some are forced to make some extreme decisions as a result of the intensity of the sport. This time, it is the Korean professional golfer Tom Kim, who fell prey to such a disconcerting outcome. The defending champion recently shared some disheartening news which left his fans much dejected, but still hopeful for the future.

Tom Kim withdraws from the upcoming tournament

Golfweek recently shared a heartbreaking announcement about the South Korean professional golfer along with an important update about his health. The World No. 17 golfer has withdrew from the Wyndham tournament.

The 21-year-old had recently suffered an injury during the 2023 Open Championship which led him to back out of the upcoming tournament. “I am still having a hard time with my ankle so I am getting the treatment I need to heal completely,” Kim said in a statement to the PGA Tour while mentioning the withdrawal. While physical problems are part of a sportsman’s career, it is much disheartening to see the professional golfer not be able to defend his title. He will be hoping to make a recovery to make it to East Lake where the PGA Tour Championship is set to take place.

The exquisite sport of golf is an intense game as its competitiveness may lead to injuries and exertion much like any other sport. Kim suffered an ankle injury during the recent Open which resulted in a grade-1 tear in his ankle. It happened when the golfer stepped off a patio wrong which led to him slip in the backyard at his rental home after the 1st round of the tournament.

Kim’s recent performance at the Open

The South Korean golfer managed to put up a remarkable performance at the 2023 Open Championship. Battling a grade-1 injury, he went on to finish at T2 ending up with a score of 7-under-par 277. While he could only score a 3-over 74 in the first round, he went ahead to put up a phenomenal performance to score a total of 9 birdies and an eagle in the final rounds after the cut.

The golf pro was able to continue only after treating the injury with casting, ice and multiple sessions of rehab throughout the Championship.
