There is no greater strength than family! Both in happiness and sadness, the PGA Tour pros proved it on Sunday at the TPC Scottsdale. Thomas Detry nearly made a hole-in-one on the rowdy 16th hole, capping off a string of four straight birdies with a 6-under 65 on Sunday to claim his first PGA Tour victory at the Phoenix Open by seven shots. After a soggy 2024 tournament that caused delays, this year’s event was blessed with perfect weather at the Stadium Course.

The fans, as wild as ever at the PGA Tour’s most raucous stop, behaved themselves, at least a bit more than last year’s chaos. Thomas Detry leveraged the ideal conditions on Sunday. He entered the final round with an exceptional five-shot lead and finished strong. He stuck his shot to 16 inches on the 16th hole and grabbed his first win in 68 PGA Tour starts.

The moment he completed his shot on the eighteenth hole, the first thing to happen was his almost 3-year-old daughter Sophie, who came running to him in excitement. He picked her up and celebrated the victory. Behind her, Alba Elizabeth, his younger daughter came running in, and they shared another wholesome moment.

And that was not all, his biggest support, Sarah Detry walked into the field and kissed him, and that was indeed a very wholesome moment with his family on the greens. So much so that even the official page of Golf on CBS shared the video, and wrote, Thomas Detry celebrates his first career PGA TOUR win with his family ❤️”.

While for Thomas Detry, it was a happy celebration with his family, it was not the same for Jordan Spieth. His family stood by him when he needed them the most. In heartbreak and in victory, kith and kin brave through it all.

Jordan Spieth once again misses out on winning the WMPO

After finishing T60 with a disappointing 1-under at the 2022 WM Phoenix Open, Jordan Spieth came close to clinching the trophy, not once, but twice. In 2023, he tied for the sixth position, running just eight strokes behind Scottie Scheffler, and in 2024, he tied for the same position, with just seven strokes behind Nick Taylor.

Does family support make or break a golfer's career? Detry and Spieth's stories say it all.

Have an interesting take?

Spieth entered the Sunday round with T2 place at the WM Phoenix Open, riding a streak of 45 consecutive bogey-free holes, including a 16-foot par on the final hole Saturday. But this time, Spieth came even closer, and the fans almost thought that he would finally taste victory after almost three years (his last win was at the 2022 RBC Heritage). However, a final round of four birdies, and one bogey, landed him with a 3-under on Sunday, and he tied for the fourth position, eight strokes behind Detry.

After the round at the 2025 WMPO was over, Spieth was seen walking with Sammy, sound asleep on his lap as he walked out of the course, and he also picked Sophie up on his lap at the same time. His wife Annie Varrett came to him and kissed him, showing her support even during the tough time. Golf on CBS shared this video as well on their Instagram wall, and shared, “This is what it’s all about.” After all, everything we do, we do it for the family, right? And the Spieths proved it at the TPC Scottsdale. What do you think about the two lovely families? Let us know in the comments section below!
