When Michael Greller took a year off from his teaching job in 2011, he didn’t expect that one year would stretch to 13 years and running. But that’s exactly what happens when one underestimates Jordan Spieth. An 18-year-old back then, the golfer was just starting out, while his future caddie was a maths teacher in Seattle, caddying for his friends on the side for some extra money. They met during the US Junior Amateur, and halfway through Spieth’s first season as a professional, he picked won the John Deere Classic becoming the first teenager to win on the PGA Tour since Ralph Guldahl in 1931. And there it was…
The glowing green sign Greller needed to leave his desk job to pursue his dream life. But, the duo—who’ve practically been inseparable since—seem to be on the verge of separation for a little while, worrying fans.
The 2025 season will begin on January 2 with The Sentry at the Kapalua Plantation Course. And well, Jordan Spieth will continue his recovery process from wrist surgery and will not be a part of the season opener, despite making a few public appearances. For the unversed: He had suffered an injury in his left hand while playing with his son Sammy. Despite the golfer opting for a rest-and-recovery strategy instead of surgery, it never healed. The issues deepened during the 2024 season after a tendon in his wrist “popped out” while hitting a greenside bunker shot.

Having said that, while Michael Greller too was resting during all this time, he no longer will be off the course. For the 2025 Sentry, he will be caddying for none other than Max Homa.
As reported by Sean Martin, “Michael Greller has a new bag this week. He’s caddying for Max Homa at The Sentry. It’s just temporary. Greller’s boss, Jordan Spieth, isn’t in the field, and Homa needed a temporary fill-in. His longtime caddie, Joe Greiner, is expected to return later in the West Coast swing.” Even Jordan Spieth’s official X fan account, Spieth Legion, reported the same news.
🚨 #WOW: Michael Greller will caddy for Max Homa at the Sentry as a fill in. 😮👀

This of course has left all Spieth fans anxious about the implications of this sudden change-up. Could it indicate something bigger?
Jordan Spieth’s fans left curious about his comeback
One fan was direct with his enquiries. “Big deal or nothing to look into?” they asked, to which the Jordan Spieth fan account responded, “I don’t think it’s a big deal.” However, some were still not convinced, as one user questioned, “I know you said it’s not a big deal but what if Max wins?”
Jordan Spieth had a terrible 2024 season. He appeared in twenty-two events, and not only did he have no wins, but also he only had four top-25 finishes. The PGA Tour star also missed cuts in seven of the events. He was last seen at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in August where he finished at T68, and this did not allow him to qualify for the BMW Championship. Well, looking at Speith’s performances, it’s understandable why fans are panicking.
“Ummm wtf?!? 👀,” wrote one X user, while another sarcastically said, “Imagine thinking this is a big deal 🤣😂 happens more than you think”.

As for Max Homa too, it is going to be two years since he grabbed his last victory at the 2023 Farmers Insurance Open in January. He too is struggling to make it work. This season for him has been no wins, three top-10 finishes, and four missed cuts. Taking to this, one of them even asked, “So what happens if Max wins? Both players need a spark it seems this could be risky for all ”
A few fans were left confused it seems. One simply commented, “??????”
The beginning of a new season always brings suspects of fan-favorite players moving to LIV Golf. Given that Jordan Spieth has not been on the field for a long time, some fans are also worried that he might move to the breakaway league. Although time and again he has denied the rumor, so did Jon Rahm before leaving. Taking to this, one of them said, “Big deal or nothing to look into?”

Jordan Spieth and Michael Greller are widely known for having a long discussion before he sets off to hit any shot. They discuss every possibility, and Greller tries to put in every input that he has. But some of the fans take it as a negative practice. Taking to this, one of them said, “Oh great, Greller will now have another golfer to over-talk and agonize over every single shot like with Speith.”

Greller wasn’t a math teacher in Seattle. He taught in Gig Harbor. Big difference.
