Jon Rahm’s career has been on a rollercoaster for the past few weeks. For starters, fans are still not over his battle with the DP World Tour because of the pending fines. However, Rahm’s appeal against the DP World Tour’s $1 million fines for competing in LIV Golf events has been successful and has allowed him to participate in upcoming tournaments which included the Spanish Open. This has enabled Rahm to maintain his tour membership and remain eligible for the 2025 Ryder Cup team.
Going back to his Spanish Open performance, Rahm narrowly missed out on a record fourth Spanish Open title after losing to Angel Hidalgo in a brutal playoff. The LIV golfer finished with a 14-under-par score to level with Hidalgo after 72 holes. However, a bad tee shot in the playoff eventually cost him the title. The golfer even reflected on his opponent’s brilliant performance and said, “May he enjoy it. Winning at home, winning a Spanish Open with all the support that there has been, you could tell how much he felt it and how important it was for him”. This just shows that despite losing the title, Rahm is actually quite happy for his competitor.
However, it is worth noting that amidst all these setbacks, Rahm actually achieved something amazing. Nosferatu on X noticed that, compared to other golfers, Rahm’s OWGR ranking has indeed gotten better after his loss at the Spanish Open. “Very few other #OWGR updates to talk about in the higher echelon this week… Tommy moves up to #11 Rahm up to #13 Shane up to #28 Puig up to #124″, read the post. Previously, Rahm was in the 15th position.

The golfer had also missed the LIV Dallas Team Championship due to the flu, so seeing him all healthy and happy meant a lot to the fans. Moreover, Rahm also reflected on his illness by saying, “Thinking that on Tuesday morning I was in hospital in another country, on the other side of the Atlantic, in the end, I’m happy”. But there still stands a roadblock in his career because of the rival PGA Tour.

Have an interesting take?
Jon Rahm’s return to the DP World Tour at the Spanish Open definitely sparked excitement, despite ongoing tensions between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf defectors. Rahm, who is a two-time major winner, shared his vision for men’s professional golf and advocated for freedom to play between tours without restrictions. “This is where I see the future of men’s professional golf heading. There won’t be a merger or unified world tour… things will carry on as they are, but players will be allowed free movement as they used to be. Let the players choose where they want to play, ” said the golfer.
Jon Rahm wants golfers to play freely without restrictions, doesn’t matter what tour they play for. According to Rahm, he’s hopeful for a resolution between LIV Golf and the PGA Tour, however there’s still a catch. Some PGA Tour players, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy want LIV Golf defectors like Rahm to return all the money they earned through LIV and are on the negotiation board to make that happen. In contrast, Rahm believes his decision to join LIV Golf should be respected and recently said, “We took a risk joining LIV Golf, and that decision should be respected.” Golf’s future is uncertain, and it remains to be seen if Rahm’s vision will succeed.
