Is Jon Rahm's meltdown over LIV Golf genuine, or is there something else behind his tears?

It was the 11th event on the 2024 LIV Golf circuit. Jon Rahm had just emerged victorious at the event that took place at the JCB Golf & Country Club. But what turned the heads of many was the sight of the Spaniard breaking down after clinching his first win after the 2023 Masters. Even so, the emotional response doesn’t seem to be enough to prove his loyalty to the Saudi-backed circuit, for he might be “experiencing deep regret” about his LIV Golf jump.

A report was recently shared by Golf Digest and then reposted by NUCLR Golf mentioning how a “Veteran Tour Insider” spilled the beans on the Spanish golfer’s current mindset. “I am 100 percent positive,” quoted Jaime Diaz, a golf writer, “If Jon could give the money back to the Saudis and come back to the tour, he couldn’t write the check fast enough.” The 29-year-old had, back in December, joined LIV Golf for a reported $500 million.

The veteran insider also reportedly pointed out how the athlete had miscalculated the whole decision’s effect. He said, “Now there are only four times a year when he’s playing that anybody is remotely interested. He thought his stature in the game was secure no matter where he was playing, and it was a bad miscalculation.” Interestingly, only a handful of times does Jon Rahm get to cross paths with the PGA Tour pros, the four major championships being one of them, especially the U.S. Open and Masters (remember his wins back in 2021 and 2023, respectively?).

The report shared by the news handle comes out a week after the 2-time major champion clinched his first LIV Golf win in the UK. He did so by carding a 4-under 67 on the final round of play. Consequently, Rahm was able to emerge triumphant by leading over Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann, both of whom were at T2. Anyhow, couple that with the recent report, and the fans seem to have a lot to say.

Jon Rahm’s ‘regret’ sends the golf world into a fervor

After Jon Rahm’s defection in December, the golfer had expressed how hopeful he was of a deal between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. “I think I could be the start of a tipping point,” added the athlete, “I understood the weight that that decision could have and the impact it could have… That’s why it wasn’t such an easy decision.” The golfer even attributed his move as some sort of catalyst for the framework agreement, seeing as how he was at the top rungs of the OWGR when it took place. A couple of fans couldn’t help but point out the same in response to the recent report as they commented, “I believe he thought his leaving would be a catalyst for the merger. That hasn’t been the case,” and “Seems he thought he was bigger than the game.”

The athlete moved to the Saudi-backed league in 2023 after reportedly signing a deal worth half a billion dollars with LIV Golf. He mentioned how the ‘framework agreement’ that came early that year had “opened the door” for him to work with the PIF. “I’m getting paid more to play the same sport and have more time,” said the pro, “I don’t know about most people, but that sounds great to me.” He also divulged how he wanted to set his family up as best as possible. Well, some followers alluded to the same while responding how such a lucrative deal wasn’t enough for him; “Jon Rahm is a crybaby,” and “Seems like the kind of guy who’s never truly happy.”

Jon Rahm’s switch to LIV Golf has led to his OWGR ranking going down throughout the year. However, many PGA Tour pros, especially Scottie Scheffler, have been dominating the world rankings, all thanks to the professional’s finishes on the PGA Tour. Moreover, the American’s 14 top-10 placements, including his 6 victories, along with the gold medal at the Olympics, sure do make him one of the best golfers in the world at the moment. An enthusiast pointed out how Rahm is regretful of not playing with the best in the world while commenting, “Rahmbo’s buyer’s remorse is deeply felt. He wants to battle the best in meaningful tournaments week in and week out. I think Scottie being considered the best is getting under his skin, in a good way.”

Regardless of whether he feels regret or not, one thing is for certain; Jon Rahm seems to have found his top form back. Even though he has been top-10 on LIV Golf throughout the season, the Spaniard was able to clinch his first win this year in the UK!
