The 56-year-old John Daly is one of the most popular golfers in America. Although he rose to fame due to his incredible golfing skills, including long-hitting, he is more famous for his free-spirited lifestyle. While the golfer’s diet preferences and his out-of-the-box thinking have helped him gain a lot of fans, he has also attracted many problems because of it! 

According to reports, the PGA Tour has a 456-paged file, with all Daly’s punishments and fines recorded from 1991 to 2008 for everything he has done against the rule. And the biggest fine the Tour has ever levied on him was $30,000 in 1993

Nicknamed Long John for his long-hitting, Daly was the longest on Tour from 1992 to 2002. His bombs have given a thrill to the audience and the golfer. However, it is also the reason he had to pay the biggest fine on the Tour. 

The incident that led the PGA Tour to fine $30,000 from the golfer

The story goes back to 1993 during a clinic at the Fred Meyer Challenge at The Oregon Golf Club. As one of the best long-hitter, Daly was showcasing his talent to the 5000+ audience members at the event when he got the life-changing idea!

“I think I’ll hit one downwind.” Before the host of the program, Peter Jacobsen, could register what the golfer had just said, Daly launched a towering tee shot over the large crowd at the 18th hole.

“Anyone needing laundry service, check at the 10th tee.” Although Jacobsen said it jokingly, the host later admitted that he was furious about the situation. 

John Daly was once fined for playing fast on a Tour event

Daly is known to be a crowd-pleaser. However, the Tour once fined him and fellow golfer Mark Calcavecchia for their fast play in the 1992 Players Championship.

The PGA Tour had then accused them of playing unprofessionally and were subjected to a fine. “Me and Mark just wanted to have some fun,” Daly said about the incident. “We wanted to show the fans a good time, and I think they enjoyed it. Notably, Calcavecchia revealed that the Tour dropped the fine after the two appealed against it.

John Daly is a wonderful golfer. However, his actions have sometimes landed him in trouble.
