The whopping online auction
John Daly’s 1995 Open Championship Claret Jug was recently sold online at an auction. The winning bid of the auction was for $66,000. Golf collectors were raising their bids, but after 7 bids, an unidentified bidder won the jug at a discounted rate.
The director of sports auctions at Heritage, Chris Ivy, said, “Major trophies almost never become available in the collecting market.” He further added, “This Claret Jug is a figurative Holy Grail for the advanced golf collector.”

However, the Heritage Auctions cleared the doubts about the trophy being genuine in their original description. They found that there are actually two trophies which Daly himself admits to having in possession. They said, “there is no ownership controversy today, and that this is indeed the one and only Daly Claret Jug available to the collecting public.”
What is next on the list?
Golf collectors obviously love to collect precious trophies won by legends. But what else should they auction next? Perhaps the Green Jacket of Tiger Woods, or maybe his Claret Jug. But we know for sure, whatever Heritage Auctions’ next pick will be, it’s surely going to create a hype among people and bring in a huge inflow of buyers.
