Having said that, reports suggest a possible different career choice for Daly. Not only did Daly deal with an unexpected offer, but it could also have completely altered his career in golf.

What alternate career choice was John Daly offered?

According to old reports, Daly was almost recruited by the Indianapolis Colts. The invitation was serious, and the team was ready to welcome Daly into their squad. Daly was only 25 back then and had the opportunity to play an exhibition game for the team against the New Orleans Saints.

That is if he missed the cut at the PGA Championship that year (1991).

Of course, Daly did make the cut that week and ended up winning the major title. It remains another iconic moment in Daly’s career, especially as no one expected him to even play that tournament. However, the charming star made the best out of the opportunity offered to him.

“I’m dead serious,” Colts Coach Ron Meyer had said. “I spent about an hour with John last night and if he doesn’t make the cut at the International, I’m bringing him in and he’s going to be our backup kicker and kick an extra point for us”.

Meyer further added that he was sincere, and needed to start things up.

On his end, Daly’s dream was to play in the NFL. Additionally, Daly also played football back in high school.

What did Daly have to say?

“(Daly) told me last night that if he could get on an NFL field, that would rank right up there with winning the PGA,” Meyer said. “I’ve talked with his agent and he said he’d be here if he doesn’t make the cut.”
