Does Charlie Woods need the John Daly treatment? The young protégé showed off his insane abilities at the 2024 PNC Championship. Woods was the one leading his father from the front as they managed to put up a strong performance. But it wasn’t enough to win the event. Charlie Woods is on the same path as Tiger Woods in professional golf. He will be looking to turn into a star in professional golf and compete at the highest level with the biggest names in the sport.
But that doesn’t mean that he is there yet. In fact, Woods has a long way to go before he reaches the same level as the GOAT. Still only 16, Charlie Woods has to level up his game before he gets his PGA Tour card. And a former golfer believes he knows exactly what Tiger Woods needs to take a move up the ladder.
John Daly is one of the most beloved figures in golf. He is also an excellent driver of the ball. In fact, from 1999 to 2008, Daly had the highest driving distance average in the entire PGA Tour. He had a habit of crossing 300 yards consistently. The legend also loves to live an energetic life filled with adventures that other professional golfers are not accustomed to. But that doesn’t stop Daly from sharing his experiences with his peers. And he recently revealed what he thinks is missing for Charlie Woods to go get those extra yards off the drive.

John Daly joined Pat Spinosa for an episode of the Like a Farmer Podcast on YouTube. It was more than an hour-long episode where the two had an intense discussion about the Tiger vs. Jack debate, among other things. Around the closing segment of the episode, Spinosa raised a question about Charlie Woods. He asked on the Podcast, “Is he going to be like hyped up to what he can do?” That’s when John Daly revealed that he had a conversation with Tiger Woods about this.
Daly said, “You got to let Charlie spend a month with me. I got to put some mashed potatoes and meat in that boy.” The legend believes that Charlie Woods is a bit underweight to hit long drives. Explaining why it’s important to do that right now, Long John added, “He’s going to be 6″2, and he is going to be a bone.” Daly is implying that the young Woods will grow tall over the next few years but will still have a lean stature.
The Lion stated that Charlie Woods needs to have some “John Daly food” to gain some weight and start hitting “60 yards past everybody like Little John (John Daly II) does.” Having Charlie Woods with the skills of his father and the driving range of John Daly would certainly be a lethal combination. This could be the key factor in turning Charlie into a future star on the PGA Tour.

John Daly II vs. Charlie Woods: The battle of the proteges
Following his father’s footsteps, John Daly II has hit the ball long and far. The 21-year-old is often seen driving more than 300 yards on the course. Daly II might have not found his footing in the professional circuit yet. But there is no question that he will win most of the long-range driving contests in his age group.
In fact, John Daly’s son has actually been racking up 300-yard drives for nearly 4 years now. Back in 2021, Daly gave an interview to Golf.com. During the conversation, he mentioned how Daly II “hits it so far. He pummels it. He’s flying it about 300, 305 now.” That’s some insane distance considering he was only 16 years old then.
However, Charlie Woods has already surpassed that feat. The 16-year-old found some great distance when he teamed up with Tiger Woods at the 2024 PNC Championship. During one of the rounds, Woods Jr. managed to hit a 323-yard drive on the 13th hole to give his team the advantage. And he did it with his lean stature that John Daly questioned. Tiger Woods also acknowledged his son’s ability, along with the quality of the driver he was using. In a rare YouTube appearance on the Grant Horvat channel, the GOAT stated that Charlie Woods’ drive is much “tighter,” which helps him find great range on the course. Not to forget that he is also incredibly accurate considering his ace in the final round of the PNC Championship.

Charlie Woods is already hitting longer than John Daly II. If we add John Daly’s diet to the mix, then the likes of Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy might start getting worried.
