On September 1, the whole world was dizzy as the news of Jimmy Buffett’s passing came through. At the age of 76, the legendary singer left the world peacefully in his sleep after four long years of secretly battling a rare skin cancer, lymphoma. During his last few breaths, Buffett was surrounded by his friends, family, music, and dogs.

Away from his home too, Buffett was both celebrated and mourned, with people from around the world taking to social media to pay homage to him. And given the special bond the singer shared with golf, many, including the retired LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam and her husband, openly paid their respects.

Buffett’s songs were breezy and humorous. They inspired a whole culture of running free to the Florida Keys or the Caribbean. With a frozen, boozy drink always in one’s hand. His fans, in unison, call themselves parrotheads—a group the LPGA legend and her husband, Mike McGee, were certainly part of.

In her tribute to the musician, Annika Sorenstam raises a glass to the Mississippi-born musician. And so do her husband and some other friends. The background song is Buffett’s famous track, Margaritaville. One of them says in the video, “We just wanna toast a Margarita to Jimmy Buffett. He lived life to the fullest. Nobody had a better lifestyle and a brand than him, from the beach to the ocean to the sky, where he’s now. God bless him. Cheers!”

The seven people in the room, including the 10-time major winner, then go on to hum the song by the legend. They raised their Fizzy Beez (a ready-to-drink vodka-based cocktail brand that Sorenstam owns that won a double gold medal at the WSWA Industry Award Show) and toasted his life. “Raising a Fizzy Beez Margarita to the legendary @jimmybuffett,” was the caption of the video on Instagram, showing how much he meant to them all.

The song in the video, Margaritaville, is a radio staple by Jimmy Buffett that he wrote while wanting to create a record about the ocean. It was his biggest hit and a signature Buffett song from his hit album, Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes. Many of Buffett’s songs seemed to be a reflection of his life. Another radio staple, ‘Cheeseburger in Paradise,’ also witnessed immense popularity. It is the story of a man in his 70s stuck on a diet of carrot juice and yearning for a cheeseburger.

The singer had the talent to take a simple concept and turn it into a universally relatable song. Hence, his talent transcended verticals and was appreciated by people of every occupation. And perhaps a little extra by the golf world thanks to his immense love and connection with the sport.

The golf-loving man behind the famous musician

Jimmy Buffett was a man of many faces. Not only was he a great singer and songwriter, but he was also a three-time number-one best-selling author. The legend even appeared on TV in the hit show Hawaii Five-0. However, among all these personalities, there was one particularly loved by the golf community—that of Buffett, the golf fanatic.

The singer’s love for the sport was immense. He would play the sport in his free time to let off steam. Even though he was a right-handed guitarist, Buffett was part of a rare breed of left-handed golfers. In 2020, he even tried his hand at caddying. He carried the bag of amateur golfer Patricia Ehrhart during the practice rounds of the US Senior Women’s Open.

Moreover, as per his Instagram, there weren’t many things Buffett loved more than “cajun martinis and playing afternoon golf.” In fact, many of his 1324 posts on the platform witness him on the course, enjoying the game and the view. Over the years he had spent on the green, he had gotten quite good, and nearly 4 years ago, he even shot a “hole in one”.
