Jim Furyk and his wife celebrate annual holiday event
Every year on Christmas eve, the Furyk household, led by Jim and his wife Tabitha, set up meals for underprivileged children. It was a tradition that started over eleven years ago and has gained traction gradually over the years.
According to Mrs. Furyk, the couple packed 250 bags of food in their first year of the charity event. In comparison, this year’s numbers were likely to hit around 5,000. “We are incredibly excited about tonight, our 11th year of doing this,” she said. “Our first year, we filled 250 bags. Now, we’re at over 5,000 bags of food. It gets distributed all over the city.”

The couple starts off by packing bags of meals with different food items before shipping them off to nearby areas. As always, they are ably supported by hundreds of volunteers, who play a key role in the packing and transportation of the supply.
Their primary target is to provide meals to underprivileged areas around the city. The Furyk couple lives in Northeast Florida, with an aim to supply food in Title 1 schools, food banks, and countless other charitable organizations. Additionally, the charity supplied to a food bank in Jacksonville called Feeding Northeast Florida, as well as to military bases.

Furyk household highlights the role of children in charity event
For multiple PGA Tour event winner Jim Furyk, the event is an opportunity to give. “We wanted to pack the meals and get them to those in need, but Tabitha had the idea to involve the community,” he said. “First and foremost, there are quite a few people here in the Jacksonville area that are food deprived. They are struggling to find out where that next meal is coming from. I think recognition of the issue here in the community and learning how to give back is what it’s all about.”

Additionally, the whole event gave purpose to children “to give back.” “One of the most special things for us to do this is to provide area kids an opportunity to give back,” Mrs. Furyk said. “My kids would come home and ask for $5 to give to donate…which is certainly nice. But, there was just no real connection to what they’re doing. This gives them real, hands-on experience to feel the giving during the giving season.”
