As the weather forecast said, it didn’t rain cats and dogs at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. But even without it, the PGA Tour had to delay round one. Initially, the opening round was delayed by one hour from its start time. That meant instead of a 7:45 a.m. tee time, the players teed up at nearly 9 p.m.
With the Thursday round starting late, it was at least expected that it would be completed on the first day itself. But to people’s dismay, that’s not the case. The PGA Tour Communication posted on X and shared that round one had been suspended at 8:06 p.m. CT. It was all due to the PGA Tour and Jay Monahan’s old foe, the darkness.
Many pros are still left to complete their opening round, which will continue at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, and the second round will hopefully start on time at 6:50 a.m. It has not been a lone incident of round suspensions by the Monahan-led Tour. Previously, at the Cognizant Classic, three rounds were delayed and even at the 50th PLAYERS, the second round was suspended due to the same reason.

Because of unexpected and regrettable delays, the PGA Tour finished the event on Monday, the most recent being the RBC Heritage. With how things are moving, the CJ Cup Byron Nelson may be completed on Monday as well. The constant hindrance by Monahan and Co. has frustrated the golf world and they aren’t keeping it to themselves.

Golf world fumes over Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour’s constant delays
The golf world did not take the news of round one being delayed twice lightly. One netizen highlighted how constant delays and eventual suspensions of rounds were becoming the norm for PGA Tour events and disappointingly said, “Start of a messy week already.” A PGA Tour event usually lasts for four days but that hasn’t been the case for many of the tournaments this year. Such as the 2024 WM Phoenix Open, where Nick Taylor was crowned the winner on Monday. One viewer predicted that something similar might happen at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson too and said, “Zero chance this tourney is done on Sunday now.”
Another was annoyed by the PGA Tour’s tweets week in and out about the event being delayed. And since it has become more of a habit for the Tour to do so, they taunted the Tour and irritatingly said, “Might as well schedule these tweets to send automatically each week at this point.” When the Monahan-led Tour delays the round, it is usually because of inclement weather. This time as well, the dark clouds were the reason, as said. But per this sure, it may have been due to the huge field size. They, vexed by the delays, posed a rhetorical question to the PGA Tour and said, “Can we maybe stop having 156 man field events?”

According to one user, the slow pace of the players was the culprit behind the suspension of the events, and they asked the PGA Tour to take accountability. They said, “Another tournament where slow play causes a suspension in good weather. Hey @PGATOUR address the issue.” In just two words, a fan exploded on the PGA Tour and its mismanagement over the past few days and commented, “Tour sucks,”
The PGA Tour will resume on Friday. Will the second round go smoothly without any delays by the PGA Tour? It remains to be seen.
