Is Jay Monahan's leadership the real obstacle in the PGA Tour and PIF merger saga?

The rival bosses will meet again at the Aramco Ladies Team Series Event sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour in Riyadh. Every time Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan share the stage, the golf world is always shaken. First, it was on June 6th for the PGA Tour and PIF merger and then they played the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Pro-Am.

Now the Monahan and Al-Rumayyan duo will be playing the Pro-Am at the Riyadh Golf Club at the women’s event, the Bunkered reported. And fret not, both will be registered under their names, unlike when Al-Rumayyan used a different name for one of his Pro-Am appearances. This news hits the golf world at a time when the $3 billion merger between the PGA Tour and PIF is practically at a halt.

Yes, there have been meeting after meeting, but the result has been nothing but that it is complicated and the merger will soon be finalized. Amidst this drama, golf enthusiasts have also asked Monahan to give up his CEO seat from the PGA Tour as many new changes in the Tour have been proposed for the 2026 season.

Jay Monahan & Co. to change the PGA Tour for 2026

Forget whatever you knew about the PGA Tour’s field because soon, it will all change. A day before, the golf world was shaken as the PGA Tour sent a memo to the PAC, asking them to vote in favor or against all the changes that will be implemented in 2026 on November 18th. One of the biggest changes in the PGA Tour events will be that the PGA Tour will allow only the top 100 on the FedExCup Standings the full status for the upcoming season instead of the top 125.

The full field event will be shortened to 144 instead of 156 and the full field of The PLAYERS Championship will go down from 144 to only 120. On the qualifying level, the cards given to the Korn Ferry Tour pro will be decreased from 30 to 20 and the Monday Qualifiers will be ripped off altogether. There will also be a change in the FedEx Cup points for second-position golfer and below.

Have an interesting take?

Overall, the players who do not finish on the top of the leaderboard will be affected and the competition will turn up a notch. Notably, these changes will only be implemented if PAC guys vote for them. However, even the proposal forced the fans to ask for Jay Monahan’s resignation letter. As Monahan meets with the PIF chief again, hopefully, and finally, the merger may take shape and the fans get happy news amidst all the action.
