Are player withdrawals a sign of deeper issues within the PGA Tour that need urgent attention?

The golf world seems to be in shambles! Earlier only the viewership of the PGA Tour events was at risk, but now it seems that even the players are also making their picks when it comes to competing in the events. Last weekend there were back-to-back withdrawals from the Sanderson Farms Classic at the Country Club of Jackson. Most of them happened after the opening and second rounds. But this time, it has already begun, even before the event could commence.

This year marks the debut of the Black Desert Championship at the Black Desert Resort Golf Club. The $7.5 million purse event is set to kickstart on October 10, and there have already been a few withdrawal announcements without mentioning any reason.

On Monday, Kevin Yu, who recently became the third Taiwanese player to win on the American Tour was the first to withdraw from the Championship. The reason for his withdrawal seems unknown at the moment but he could have taken this week off to spend time with his parents who flew from Taiwan to watch him play in Mississipi. Austin Cook entered the field as Yu’s replacement. The PGA Tour also revealed that Sean O’Hair has received a restricted sponsor exemption which means he will also now be teeing off at the event.

A few hours later, it was announced that Emiliano Grillo had also withdrawn and is now being replaced by Scott Piercy. Grillo finished T11 last weekend Parker Coody also withdrew and is now replaced by Ryan Palmer. Coody also withdrew from the Sanderson Farms Championship citing a wrist injury, so the chances are that his wrist still has not gotten better, hence the withdrawal.

This is not all for the hardship that the debut event is facing this week. Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has a lot more to worry about as the event could face adverse weather.

The Black Desert Resort could see unpleasant weather

The Black Desert Championship will begin on Thursday at the Black Desert Resort Golf Club, which is located in Ivins, Utah. And well, according to the weather forecast predicted by AccuWeather, the conditions are not likely to be playing outdoor sports. It has clear warnings, stating, “Partly sunny and hot; caution advised if doing strenuous activities outside” from October 8 to October 11. The weather can rise as high as 36 degrees, and the drop will only be around 33 degrees.

While practice rounds will also be affected, chances are that the heat waves might become a hurdle for the players on the first two days. However, if the 132 players survive the Friday round, only 60 players will move ahead into the weekend. As per the reports, Saturday at Ivins will be “hot with partial sunshine,”  and Sunday will be perfectly calm weather with “intervals of clouds and sun.”
