Is Jay Monahan losing his grip on the PGA Tour as LIV Golf gains more ground?

A rollercoaster ride! That may be the word that aptly describes the 2024 PGA Tour season. Sure, it had its highs and lows but one would have hoped for a good ending to the year’s regular season. But that might be too much to ask for, Jay Monahan. The reason? Well, it doesn’t seem as if the final event ahead of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, the Wyndham Championship, will start on a good note. Enter the usual villain of the men’s circuit: the harsh weather conditions.

NUCLR GOLF shared a surprising piece of news on their X handle, mentioning how the upcoming event will not allow fans to attend the Thursday round at the Sedgefield Country Club. The tweet also revealed how the decision was made owing to the weather forecast, which predicted up to 5 inches of rain for the Greensboro area. Truly an unfortunate situation for Monahan. One which was rarely seen for the Greg Norman-led circuit, interestingly so.

All three rounds at the LIV Golf event in the U.K. saw a turnout of more than 45,000 fans attending the tournament. This was especially the case since all the ground passes for the Saudi-backed league’s event were sold out. This, back then and now, paints a stark contrast against the Monahan-led circuit and its tournaments (read 3M Open and Wyndham Championship).

But there’s a catch. The 3M Open faced fewer numbers, not because of the abyssal weather. The conditions didn’t warrant an early suspension of the rounds, unlike the other Jay Monahan-led PGA Tour events. Perhaps one may attribute the same to the weariness that the golf world built up after the Open Championship, be it the athletes or the fans. Regardless of the case, it appears the contest back then failed to generate the buzz needed to beat Greg Norman’s event.

Now, coming back to the upcoming tournament in Greensboro. The Wyndham Championship will reportedly take place as planned and tee off at 6.50 a.m. on Thursday, August 8. However, the play will only go on as long as the conditions allow for it, not to mention how the ground tickets brought by fans for Thursday can be used for any one day on or before Sunday. Consequently, curiosity naturally arises: will round 1 be forced to end early because of the rain?

Is Jay Monahan losing his grip on the PGA Tour as LIV Golf gains more ground?

Have an interesting take?

The tropical storm Debby is reportedly descending on the mid-Atlantic and be it Monahan’s bad luck, the final event is set in North Carolina. The 5 inches of rain or more will also be coupled with possible wind gusts at 25–30 mph. With such unfavorable conditions, it’s not a surprise if the Thursday round gets suspended ahead of the golfers teeing off their final hole of the day.

Such a situation, meanwhile, wouldn’t be a first for Jay Monahan. The PGA Tour had suffered from intense rainfall and harsh weather conditions in the initial part of the season, with even the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am being forced to conclude after the third day. Anyhow, he would hope that the situation won’t come to that as the golfers tee off at the Sedgefield Country Club. But only time will tell!
