Javier Ballesteros Flooded With Emotions of His Late Father While Playing at St Andrews Old Course

This week, shortly after the end of an incredible Ryder Cup, the European Tour is back with the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. The event takes place over three courses, the Old Course at St Andrew’s, the Championship Course in Carnoustie, and Kingsbarns Golf Links. The Old Course has its own historic value, along with some emotional connection for Javier Ballesteros.

Javier’s father, Seve Ballesteros, is regarded as one of the best players to have ever played on the Tour. Following Seve’s death in 2011, we have seen Javier himself emerge as a talented player. This year, the 31-year-old is playing at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Of course, he continues to think about his father, who had played on the course before.

Seve Ballesteros emotional while playing at the Old Course

“Well, probably just the second shot on 18th and I think it was fantastic. I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “I mean, it’s very special to be here where my dad won in ’84 and my sister is on the bag this week and I really tried to enjoy it even though I didn’t play very well”. 

Javier is three-over-par, his highlight being the Round Hole 18 birdie. Seve Ballesteros had won the 1984 Open Championship at The Old Course. As per Javier, it was the happiest moment of Ballesteros’ life. He scored two-over 74 in Round 1.

“Yeah, I was pretty emotional coming down the 18th but after hitting the good drive I was pretty sure I was going to knock it down close to the hole,” he added, saying that it is because his short game is the strongest part of his game for him. “Definitely very happy to finish with a good shot and a birdie”.

What did Javier Ballesteros do in St Andrews?

While Javier would have liked to explore the town, they are being restricted to a bubble due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “I mean, every footstep in St Andrews and the Old Course is special,” he added. “I’ve watched my dad’s putt so many times and to be able to be here and obviously to play the tournament for which I’m very thankful to Dunhill”. 

He added that while he has used the words, again and again; it is all very special for him. Javier even shared that his father had asked him to not go in the bunkers. According to Ballesteros, one should do ok on links courses if you stay away from bunkers.
