Torrey Pines has seen a topsy-turvy few days. So has Jason Day for over a year. Torrey Pines for weather, and Day for his collaboration with Malbon Golf. Ever since his partnership with the new-age golf apparel brand, the golfer hasn’t gone through an event without attracting criticism. For his outfits. Be it wearing a very loud sweater at the Masters or very baggy pants, fans leave no opportunity to bash his choice. His response?

“They [Malbon] just scripted me in it and I was wearing it. They send you the scripting and say, this is what we want you to wear Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and I’m like, OK.” Pretty standard one.  Jason Day finished T3 at the American Express Open last week and looked set to have another top-10 finish but struggled mightily on Day 4 at the Farmers Insurance Open. He started the Saturday with a score of 3 under par, shot a woeful 4 over, to finish with a total of 1 over. It wasn’t, of course, his performance that caught the eye, but once again, his apparel.

Day sported a quarter-zipped sweater with varying shades of blue, signifying the sky and the mountains. The sweater had an image of a meadow surrounding the mountains along with classic “MALBON GOLF” imprinted in the middle in big font. Day became the first Tour member to become Malbon Golf’s ambassador. The roster now includes Charley Hull, Jeong-eun Lee, and Jesper Pernevik.

For fans, who are curious as to who is responsible for the sweater, look no further than Jason Day. Esquire editor Ben Boskovich had asked Malbon Golf founder, Stephen Malbon about the outfit. He had this to say,We actually didn’t script him this week. Guy’s a legend. What he’s worn all week is part of his personal collection of Malbon gear, so he dressed himself, and I think he did it quite well.

We do not think that most of the fans agree with you on that last part, Malbon Golf. We do not.

Fans question Jason Day’s deal’s worth with Malbon Golf

The details of the sponsorship deal are not known, but this one fan was curious to know. “Just how much are they paying him to look foolish?” the fan wrote. No one should wear anything they don’t like. At least not for free. One user was very candid in his opinion.“Ugliest apparel out there, yikes! Good thing he’s getting paid to wear it.” he stated. Another user also acknowledged the partnership that is in place for Jason Day and stated “If they paid me what he’s getting paid, yes. But he does look like a stooge.” Not Day’s first rodeo, right? Remember his “pantaloons”? The ones fans wanted a lot of explanation for?

While the sweater is not available online on the Malbon website, one can assume that the amount is not small, especially considering the cost of the other apparel that Malbon offers. The exorbitant cost of the apparel was enough for one fan to jibe, “Yea, the quarter zip is $25,000 too,” referring to how these items could be priced. Fun fact, the sweater Day wore for the Masters Championship in 2024 was sold for $18,000 at an auction for his foundation.

Another user added, “I don’t know a single golfer who would wear this on the course.” Well, that might be true. But there have been some crazy outfits on the golf course. John Daly, a fan-favorite, is known for his colorful pants on the course. His partnership with Loudmouth has seen him rock crazy outfits on the course, including Hooters-themed pants at the 150th Open Championship in 2022.

Ian Poulter’s striking gold shirt at the 2008 Johnnie Walker Classic is another crazy wardrobe ensemble. Shingo Katayama’s choice of cowboy hats on the course as well as Duffy Waldorf’s Hawaiian shirt collection are all outfits that graced the PGA Tour and raised the curiosity of the fans. Rickie Fowler’s classic Sunday Orange, when he is fully clothed in orange has been a great attempt to bring some flair on the greens.

While Jason Day’s outfit has been a game changer, one fan was quick to call out his literal ’below-par’ performance. “Focus on better performances rather than being a story for other reasons,” the fan expressed his thoughts. However, there was one instance, yeah shockingly one, when fans praised Day’s outfit. In one of the practice rounds of the Presidents Cup, Day wore a beige jacket on top of an off-white pullover. Fans found it “drippy.”
