Over the past few days, the golf world has been hyper-focused on the proposed Saudi golf league and Phil Mickelson’s comments about the same. Furthermore, the PGA Tour’s side has strengthened with support from icons like Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau. Of course, with little to no support from big stars, the Saudi golf league plans might not take off.

However, players like Rickie Fowler and Brooks Koepka believe that the threat is not yet gone. Though one does need ample support, the Greg Norman-backed initiative might soon be back with another plan in place.

During a recent interview, Fowler went ahead to explain why exactly he feels the Saudi golf league chapter is far from closed.

“I’ve known those guys for quite a while. I’ve played with Maj and Yasir in the pro-am over in Abu Dhabi,” he said. Over here, the 33-year-old is speaking about Majed Ali Sorour (Saudi Golf Federation’s CEO) and Yasir Al-Rumayyan (Public Interest Fund’s Governor).

“They love golf. They’re golf nerds kind of like all of us,” Fowler added. He explained that he really does not see the threat go away, as people are not really scared about the situation.

While it might be a long road for them, Fowler might not be entirely wrong. Per reports, the Saudi Public Investment Fund is currently one of the richest wealth funds. Additionally, their assets are around $500 billion in total.

As their end goal seems to be more than just a profit, their efforts might be renewed soon. Adding on to that, Fowler also seems to think that some competition might do the PGA Tour good, even though it is the best tour to play on.

Brooks Koepka has his say

Koepka also shared similar views on the topic. “I think it’s going to still keep going,” Koepka said, adding that everyone ends up talking about money. Since the Saudi-backed league has ‘enough’ money, Koepka thinks they can eventually double up and get their guys. “Somebody will sell out and go to it”.

Even though players have spoken for the PGA Tour, most people believe anything can happen. After all, even the possibility of another super league would have sounded bizarre years ago.
