The 2023 US Open is definitely different than other golf majors. No, it is not about the competition or the course difficulty, but how for two consecutive years now it has been scheduled amid chaos. Last year around the same time, LIV Golf disrupted the golf ecosystem. Now, the big merger between the PGA Tour and LIV has rekindled those flames of disruption.
The PGA Tour players, just like the rest of us, got to know about the golf union through an online medium. Not only was the news of the coalition unexpected, but the way it became public added to its unpredictability. Just hours before the colossal US Open, World No.2 sat down for a press conference. With so much uncertainty looming over the new golf union, people had many questions. And well, the reporters surely delivered when they asked the PGA Tour Pro about the biggest thing he would like to know about the billion-dollar merger.
Rahm started off by adding his name to the list of players who are clueless about the mega news that got public last week. He said, “Well, there’s a lot of not-answered questions.” The Spaniard also added that trying not think about the recent deal, just before a major, was difficult.
Although he followed the statement with a belief that it all comes to the point where one has to trust the management. He added, “I want to have faith that this is the best thing for all of us, but it’s clear that that’s not the consensus.” This was an indication that many golfers from the traditional league felt betrayed after the news of the merger became known. One such professional athlete was Rory McIlroy who felt like a “sacrificial lamb”.
Rahm also believed that the “general feeling” is that of betrayal. However, he was empathetic enough to understand why so much secrecy surrounded the golden union of golf. The Spanish golfer admitted honestly that many wouldn’t have been able to make it through the PAC meeting without “spilling the beans” right after. Yet, the golf star had a few more pointers to make.
Rahm gets candid about the ‘state of uncertainty’
On Tuesday, the Spanish golfer presented a straightforward answer on the table. He admitted that many individuals might be feeling a sense of deception from management. But he earnestly understood the motive behind the secrecy. However, on a personal level, he provided a glimpse of how it felt to receive the news as an integral part of the league.
He said, “It’s just not easy as a player that’s been involved, like many others, to wake up one day and see this bombshell.” Hence, the reason why many of them are in “a state of limbo.”

According to Rahm, the unknown times have been let loose because players have no knowledge about what is exactly happening or what has been finalized. He called it, “a state of uncertainty.”
Nonetheless, the 2021 US Open winner believed that it was not his area of expertise. It was the guys on the management board who Rahm believed were going to make better decisions than him on the business front. Jon Rahm concluded, “We’ll see” and that is exactly the approach right now with regard to the golf merger!
