As a sportsperson, one shoulders a lot of responsibility on and off the course. Especially during a major tournament, when all eyes are on the golfer, it can get a little overwhelming. In these times, acquiring a huge fan base is usually great; explicitly, if that support belongs to one’s native place, then that is an added bonus!

Michelle Wie West found herself surrounded by similar circumstances during the 2014 US Women’s Open. As the golfer narrated her story, it is important to imagine that the atmosphere at Pinehurst No. 2 was quite traditional and in line with how a golf major should be. The crowd was mostly Carolinian, and they encompassed a prestigious golf course, keenly awaiting their favorite golfers’ performances.

However, soon the traditional setting was disrupted when three big Hawaiian tour buses entered the premises. That is all it took for the crowd to wonder, “What was going on?” The answer was quite evident. The Hawaiian native, Michelle Wie West, had drawn a vigorous Hawaiian audience to the course for her major!

The feelings were so intense that the golfer said, “It was very special for me.” Well, of course it was; after all, she went on to win the event surrounded by her natives!
