The golf world has seen many stories both on and off the course. And among these stories, some talk about the road to victory while others tend to narrate the defeats that one suffers. And such a journey of a passionate golfer was witnessed by none other than his own caddie as he witnessed the player’s gruelling journey through one of the majors of the game.

The story had become very popular as it resurfaced again through a post by Golf Digest on Twitter. The enthusiasts of the sport were able to relive the story again as the caddie recounted the tragic story of his player whose “future was dictated by his past”.

Anonymous caddie recounts his player’s tale at the Masters

It was on March 28th this year that the tragic story of the player started to make its rounds in the golf community. The tale made a comeback through the social media handle of Golf Digest, a while back, as it narrated the story of a Masters collapse by a professional golfer through the words of his trusted caddie.

Although being a professional for a while, the player in question did not have a great track record at the Masters’ venue according to his looper. Nevertheless, in a particular year at the major, he had a great week leading to a shot at the title. With good days coming off on the said Friday and Saturday, they were well set for the final 18 holes.

But, on that fated day, the golfer was not able to prove his mettle as the reality of the situation got to him. The chronicler went ahead to say, “He was as muted as he had ever been… Think what it would be like to work your entire life for one goal and it was now on the line,” while recounting the mentality exhibited by his player. The duo was not able to pull off their best and they went from being in contention for the title to needing a miracle for the win.

The duo was not able to clinch the victory as they finished in the top 10 while barely making it out of the 18 holes. Both of them were visibly shaken as the golfer burst into tears as he saw his mother after the final round. Although a good finish at the top, the looper mentions how both himself and his player were very wrecked after the performance.

“Years later, my player told me he barely remembers what happened after the Masters… More than any other event, the Masters is what he wanted, and he felt that it was gone forever,” continued the caddie as he remembers the hit his player took to his career.

Although they have had other shots at major championships, the two never came close to the finish they secured that fateful week. When quizzed on whether his life would have changed for the better if they had won, the anonymous narrator expresses his uncertainty about the “road that went untravelled” but he is sure that something like contending in the Masters is a thing to be proud of.

The golfer’s past dictated his future

The unnamed looper ends the tale by opening up about his golfer’s life after retirement. After playing the game of golf as much as he could, he changed his job to become a broadcaster for a while. The narrator describes the player as a sharp person, with a firm understanding of where his ceiling was.

Most guys in the booth for the broadcasting job had a major to their name and this made him feel singled out. The golfer also conveyed how he couldn’t move on from that one loss and his past was in control over his future. Although no longer together, they still catch up with each other occasionally. And in one such instance, the golfer expressed how “it still hurts,” whenever he sees a Masters flag.
