Patrick Cantlay has been a rising star in the PGA Tour. His ranking took a massive boom after he managed to win 3 tournaments last year. He continued his top form in 2022 by winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

Previously, Brooks Koepka was an open critic of the Saudi-backed Golf Tour. Koepka joining the LIV Golf left everyone surprised, with many believing more stars could follow in his footsteps by leaving the PGA Tour.

What did Cantlay say about Koepka’s decision?

It was quite obvious that the questions related to Brooks Koepka’s deal with the LIV Golf would hijack the Travelers Championship press conference. The media wasted no time in asking Cantlay to share his feelings about Koepka’s departure.

Patrick Cantlay did say that he was surprised to hear the news. He said, “Yeah, not unlike some of the announcements we’ve heard the last month.” Cantlay further revealed that he hasn’t spoken to any players who left the PGA Tour for the LIV Golf.

Current World Number Three further said that he understands the players only made the jump to the Saudi-backed Tour because they believe that’s best for them. He said, “I haven’t talked to any of those guys about it, but, you know, if it makes sense for them and they feel like it’s the best opportunity for them professionally, then I understand that. Everyone has to make their own personal best decision.”

In the end, Cantlay shares how he regrets the fact that he won’t be playing those stars more frequently now. He further added, “It’s unfortunate not to be able to play against them because I think most everybody in my position wants to play against the best players in the world week-in and week-out. But it is what it is.”

Patrick Cantlay concerned about PGA Tour

With top golfers resigning from PGA Tour to go play in the rival league, Patrick Cantlay shared his thoughts on how he feels concerned about the relevancy of the PGA Tour.

He said, “I think everyone’s concerned. Like I said, I think everyone really wants to play against the best players in the world. A lot of us are hyper competitive out here and that’s maybe what drove us to be as good as we are.” Cantlay’s concern with the lack of tough competition on the PGA Tour is understandable.

Cantlay is still a rising star with a lot more to accomplish. His recent run of form only seems to improve and with many top golf stars shifting to LIV Golf, Cantlay has the opportunity to dominate the PGA Tour for the coming years. But the real question is, will Patrick Cantlay continue playing in the PGA Tour or he too will make the jump to LIV Golf?
